Suzuki Introduces Swace, A Rebadged Toyota Corolla Estate, In Europe

The second Toyota-based Suzuki in Europe as part of the joint venture between the two carmakers is based on the Corolla Estate

  • The Swace will share at least one powertrain with its counterpart.

  • It gets a few design changes to distinguish it from the Corolla.

  • Don’t get your hopes high as it is not India bound.

Suzuki has launched the Swace, a station wagon based on the Corolla Estate, in Europe. The global alliance between Toyota and Suzuki, which involves cross-badging between the two in select markets, now sees Suzuki’s second Toyota-based offering in Europe. Earlier, Suzuki had revealed the ACross, which is based on the Toyota RAV-4 SUV.

The Swace gets minor cosmetic changes to distinguish itself from its Toyota counterpart. It gets a Suzuki-styled grille up front, and a Suzuki-specific steering wheel inside. Being an estate, it also gets a pretty spacious boot with a max volume of 1,606 litres.

The Swace will share at least one powertrain with the Corolla Estate. Suzuki has confirmed that this powertrain will be a 1.8-litre petrol hybrid unit, where the combustion engine produces 97PS and the electric motor puts out 71PS. Drive will be sent to the front wheels via a CVT.

Sadly, the Swace is unlikely to hit our shores. The joint venture, however, has led to some offerings in India too. Toyota’s second Maruti Suzuki-based offering is all set to be launched on September 23.

Dubbed the Urban Cruiser, it is based on the Vitara Brezza and will mark Toyota’s debut in the sub-4m SUV segment. It will compete with the likes of the Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV300, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, and the upcoming Kia Sonet.
