McLaren’s Latest Hybrid Supercar Ditches Their Numerical Naming Scheme

It’ll be the first McLaren to be built under the McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA) carbon fibre platform

  • Latest teaser images reveal high-mounted dual exhausts and badging at the centre.

  • It will be powered by a twin-turbo V6 hybrid engine.

  • Performance will be similar to McLaren’s V8-engined models.

  • It will sit between the GT and the 720S in McLaren’s portfolio.

Back in October, the folks from Woking had revealed the first teaser images of an upcoming hybrid supercar going through its testing phase. Well now, that hybrid supercar has a name. Called the Artura, it ditches McLaren’s traditional numerical naming scheme. Aside from that, the carmaker has also released more teaser images.

The latest teaser images are a closer look at the rear end which is draped in a green shade. It consists of a mesh pattern, flanked by dual exhausts. At the centre lies the Artura and McLaren badging. The rest of the model is yet to be revealed, but earlier camouflage teaser shots showcase a low-slung front end as well as a headlamp and fender setup similar to modern McLarens. Other highlights at the rear include a big diffuser and sleek tail lamps.

Design aside, the biggest talking point of the Artura is what’s under the hood. It's an all-new V6 internal combustion engine combined with a hybrid setup. Detailed specs haven’t been revealed yet, but McLaren claims performance levels similar to its larger V8-engined counterparts. It has also hinted at an all-electric mode with medium-range capabilities. It’ll be the third McLaren model to utilise hybrid propulsion after the P1 hypercar and the Speedtail.

Coming to where the Artura sits in McLaren’s portfolio, it’ll be between the GT and the 720S. It will also be the first McLaren model to be based on the carmaker’s new McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA) carbon fibre structure which is optimised for hybrid powertrains and next-gen driver technologies.

The McLaren Artura will go on sale around the first half of 2021. Expect more details to surface as we head closer to its launch.
