Buying a Car ? Get Best Deal

Country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India is planning to launch a new version of its small car Alto, the highest selling model in India, with a bigger engine.

According to industry sources, the company plans to launch the new Alto with a one-litre petrol engine from its latest generation of engine, the K -series.

When contacted, Maruti Suzuki India Chairman R C Bhargava said, "Alto needs a face-lift. It has been there for quite a while." He, however, declined to comment when a refreshed Alto would be launched and what kind of engine would be fitted on the new version.

Last month, MSI had introduced BS IV compliant Alto on the existing 800cc F Series engine.

Sources said the company has decided to equip the Alto with a 1000 cc K series engine.

"With a bigger K-series engine, the new Alto will obviously be costlier than the existing Alto," a source said. The existing Alto is priced between Rs 2.29 lakh and Rs 2.8 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

The Alto is the best selling car model in India averaging about 20,000 units per month. It has sold about 13.5 lakh units since its launch in September 2000.

The plan to launch Alto with a new engine is part of MSI's strategy to equip its models with the latest generation K series engine.

Maruti Suzuki offers two variants of the K series engines - 998cc three-cylinder, 'K10B' fitted in A-star, Estilo, and the new WagonR and a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder 'K12M' petrol engine powering Ritz, Swift and Swift Dzire.

In April, MSI crossed the milestone of rolling out three lakh K Series engines. The company has a total engine capacity of 10 lakh units annually, of which the share of K-Series engines is 2.5 lakh units.

Alto is too costly, with very less facilities and space inside, its price should come to M800 level, new alto with K series can be launched with old price range of 2.32 to 2.82, estilo should also be in same price bracket. It won't be too far that competition will launch small cars around 2 L range and people who are buring Alto at present price will repent due to old style/space too enpensive.Sachin | Reply

you guys need to understand that the alto is a bread and butter model ( in its current guise ). And it overtook the M800 long back because of the reduced price. The A-star is a replacement worldwide, And the fit and finish levels of the Astar are miles ahead of other cars from suzuki in india, owning partially to the fact that its for export mainly. The K-series engine is much more refined in its 3 cylinder format. And it makes for great acceleration in the A-star. Im hoping that the Alto becomes more punchier with this engine, and they put a bigger compressor for the A/C, which is a much needed improvement in the Alto. At a 3 lakh price point, it will compete with the Santro as well, which previously had the estilo/wagonR as rivals. So its good sense to have a car at every price point. Depending on your requirement, you can either have the top model of a lower car, or the base model of a higher car. | Reply

I don't know about Leaner and Fitter but Meaner it is definitely not. I test drove the new Wagon R with the K-series engine. Its lifeless. My '93 model M800 feels much better. Maruti Suzuki should quit hyping the K-series thru their ads so much and just prove to the masses what its really worth. | Reply

i guess you shud then drive in your 93 model car only...coz the K series actually feels better than the kappa of hyundai even though its abt 100 cc less...k series is really better...much better | Reply

No way I own a wagonR with K-series engine... By 3rd gear itself speedometer would have crossed the 100 barrier.. K series is itself leaner, meaner and fitter;) | Reply

should consider fitting petrol and diesel engines, k series , on omni van besides oanimather changes like better interiors and seats, higher HP to cater to AC which is not there now. I earlier bought omni with AC way back in 1988 and used it for 13 years doing over 100,000 kms but the Ac was jus a fitting not usefuno problem swith the vehicle otherwise at all. | Reply

Suzuki has one petrol engine and one Fiat diesel engine. All variety (25 or more models) are fitted with that engine. Suzuki should spend some money on R | Reply

Too many cars, with the same engine. Maruti's entry-level portfolio is all mixed up.There must en somethng like Alto / A_star at entry level, and Estilo / WagonR at a premium. | Reply

World over A Star is replacement of Alto. Why not simply reduce the price of A star to the level of alto and discard the current alto. The increased sales volume of A Star would ensure lower manufacturing costs. | Reply
 Khan (09 July 2010 22:43) Reply to A Mirza
You are right, Alto should be replaced by A Start with price tag of Alto... | Reply
