Harley Davidson launching in India

Legendary American motorcycle maker Harley Davidson is all ready to setup shop in India coming week

Chervolet Aveo

Just a day stands between America's most successful motorcycle-maker from gracing the Indian shores. Yes, we are talking about the iconic and cult brand Harley Davidson, which has enticed and charmed over a million bikers around the world and it continues to do so with the same enthusiasm and energy that it had 108 years back when William S. Harley made his first blueprint drawing of an engine designed to fit into a bicycle.

Harley Davidson has officially announced on its website that the company will make its foray in the fast-emerging and promising Indian market with its range of elite cruiser motorcycles. The model-range and its pricing are still under wraps as the product is yet to be launched. However this is a clear indication of the impact the recent economic showdown has had on the American economy. The US auto giants are now focusing on developing markets such as ours in order to reap the maximum possible benefits they can, to cover up on the lost ground and tap the potential of an emerging economy.

The import route for bikes above 800cc was opened in mid-2007 when the Indian government traded mangoes for Harley Davidson motorcycles. Yes, you read it right. For last 18 years, the Indian mangoes were banned in the US since the American government believed that the Indian farmers were using too many pesticides. In April 2007, the US government lifted the ban on Indian mangoes which meant that the Indian farmers could now be entitled to farm subsidies. In return, the Indian government revised the rule of importing high-capacity powered two-wheelers to India allowing bikes above 800cc to be imported legally in the Indian market.

However, the excise duties charged by the Indian government on 800cc and above capacity imported motorcycles are extremely difficult to overcome in order to gain a manageable profit margin. Hence Harley Davidson, which was the key factor in opening up the import route, held back its foray into India in 2007. The Japanese bike-maker Yamaha was the first one to make use of the import trade policy to launch its flagship model the YZF-R1 and its street-fighter model, the MT-01. Suzuki and Honda have followed suit by bringing in their international flagships to India and now Harley Davidson is all geared up and ready to roll into the country with its extensive range of life-style cruiser motorcycles.

The question is whether HD will sell in numbers or not is immeterial for us. The advantage is, it's presence in India will certainly help indian manufactureres to learn something from HD's presence. The primary one will be designing a bike and followed by fit and finish, quality, developing image of a brand in long run. It will certainly help companies like Royal Enfield and Bajaj in long run. If HD can design produce india specific bikes in India it would greatly benefit both HD as well as all of us. | Reply

let it come first and if it is cheaper to indian high end bikes then it will move fast in india ,sales wise other wise harley will chew the dust in indian' smentality | Reply

Am sure it will be quite expensive.I own a Yamaha XVS1300. !.3 litre, Liquid cooled, Belt driven. Awesome torque. I had to decide between a Harley and Yamaha and I went for the Yamaha easy rider. I do speeds in excess of 150kmph and have reached a top speed of 180kmph. The bike is awesome at high speeds. The cost was around 40,000 ruipees less than a HD. I have done almost 5000km in six months time and the bike is really good. The price was around 4 lacs. Techonology better than many of models of the HD's. I love Yamaha. Am planning to get it to India next eyar not sure how expensive it would turn out to be.Anyone can help me out in the calculations please. | Reply

A Sporty 883 would typically be priced in the Rs 7 to 8 Lakhs range including customs duty. The bike costs about half that in the US. Regarding some of the comments about speeds in excess of 100 kmph, except for the V rods most of the other models are not really known for speed as much as they are for riding comfort, styling/looks etc. | Reply

Cult following, great machines, ownership pride – what price? Here showroom, legal import Jap super bikes go at 12k plus; what would legendary HD price their babies at? HD Dubai prices hover around Rs. 4 lakh for their low-end Sportster (883cc) machines – with duty, freight, dealer/other mark-ups, plus cult status, would they price lower than the Japs? Passionate about my two-wheels – where’s the Dealership opening??!! | Reply

Firstly, Harleys can be ridden perfectly well on Indian roads. They are very robust. Secondly, I wonder why people think it is stupid to buy a bike with an engine capacity in excess of 880 cc( by the way 883 cc is the cap of the smallest Harley, the Sportster model) when poeple can own big cars. | Reply

Wao thi sis like a dream come true to any indian hard core biker with passion!! Harley being the cult brand has been deamt off by every one. Its not about the roads or the money, its about how passionate one is to own a harley, the othr factors become redundant then as a harley is not a evry day commuter bike to be used in the city, its a typical bike u take out on a long weekend and hit the goa highway....and enjoy the ride.HAVE BEEN WATIN FOR THIS DAY FROM MY CHILDHOOD, alas Harley is here......yippy!! | Reply
  • S Banerjee (28 August 2009 10:49)
The key to success for any brand is "localization". 800 CC bikes are impractical on our roads where passing 100KMPH is a rarity. Harley needs to come up with models suitable for India in the 350-500 CC range and price it accordingly. Importing these here will not help either, courtesy our excise duties. They need to set shop here and manufacture the bike if they are serious about making inroads into the Indian bike market.Best of luck! | Reply

A real breakthru for indian market, consumers as well as manufacture of indian market by launching imported bikes their blinded eyes could be open as the give proper quality finished to our indian bikes like harley,Im eagearly waiting to have a glimps of bike at least if i cannot afford to have one, least i may see such beauty. | Reply

It is basically a stupidity to drive a 800CC bike apart from show. Indian people are known for "VALUS for MONEY". I could really see they are going back soom... | Reply

Delighted to see Harley is coming to India. However, Harley should review the case again as there is a chance to loose the business under the present circumstances... Indian roads are not that user friendly to ride this bike. Moreover, price matters. | Reply

The minimum one cost around 12K USD. So, I expect them to be around 14-15 laks in India (ahowroom price). Add couple of laks in octroi and RTO chrges and u are sitting on 15-16 Tata Nanos :) | Reply

I won an RE and I can bet that it will never be able to fight Harleys; it simply cannot. Although the HD's will be above 800cc, I doubt if RE is facing any immediate danger; so time to ponder. That's what they all do. | Reply

Great news. Now we have honda, suzuki, yamaha and Ducati. Hope Harley will put a sensible price tag - that is something between 9 lakh to 20 lakh maximum and not like Ducati pricings which is astronomical. Dubai prices for all these 800 bikes starts less than 4.5 lakh rupees. Thus even with duty they should be able to sell starting from 8 lakh onwards. Congratulations Harley but we are now waiting for the price to decide. | Reply
