Numbers game: The new Pulsar 220 vs. the rest!

Once ready with the test figures of the new Pulsar 220 DTSi, we couldn't help but pit the numbers against those of the three established Indian performance bikes - the Yamaha YZF-R15 the Hero Honda Karizma

Bike Shootout: Survival of the FI-ttest!

It's here, and it means to cause some hefty trouble for the other Indian crotch rockets. The moment we had the test figures from Varad a.k.a. Speedy's runs astride the new Pulsar 220 DTSi, it was clear that this was going to be one heck of a challenge for the others! Even though we couldn't perform a complete comparison test back to back in the limited time and space we had while testing the bike, here's a quick check on the figures, ZigWheels style.

Numbers game: The new Pulsar 220 vs. the rest!

Pulsar 220 DTS-FI

Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTSi

It may have a faster and more affordable sibling now, but the 220 DTS-Fi remains in the market and for good reason. Even though it has marginally lower peak power output, it is making the exact same amount of torque, at lower revs. This gives the 220 FI greater driveability, as seen in its faster roll-on figures. Couple this spread of power with the crisp throttle response that fuel injection endows this bike with, and you have what still is one of the meatiest all-round bikes in the country.

Numbers game: The new Pulsar 220 vs. the rest!

Hero Honda Karizma

The old daddy of Indian performance biking is still going strong thanks to Hero Honda's reliable image. Upgrades may have caused more frustration than elation amongst bike enthusiasts thanks to their cosmetic nature, but have helped prolong the bike's life in the market. Its age may have started showing in terms of numbers, but the composed handling and relaxed riding posture makes it a great bike for fence-sitting sport riders. Plus it's a great bike to pose with too!

HEY, ANYONE READ THE PART IN THE ABOVE REVIEW OF THE PULSAR 220 ? THE PART WHERE IT SAYS....'THE MEATIEST ALLROUND BIKES IN THE COUNTRY'? I MEAN 220 CC AND WE'RE RAVING ABOUT IT. SAD. REALLY, REALLY SAD. SPEAKS VOLUMES OF OUR COUNTRY. JUST ANOTHER SLOWLY DEVELOPING SOUTH ASIAN COUNTRY. A COUNTRY WHERE A 220 CC SINGLE IS CALLED THE FASTEST BIKE IN IT! IF IT WASNT SO SAD, I'D LAUGH. I MEAN WHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD, AND I MEAN WORLD, IS A 220CC SINGLE THE FASTEST IN THE COUNTRY? LIKE THEY SAY, ONLY IN INDIA. NOW, COME ON PEOPLE, YOU KNOW I'M RIGHT. THERE'S A FEW SUPERBIKES THAT ARE AVAILABLE IN INDIA...DONT THOSE COUNT?? OR ARE WE TALKING ONLY ABOUT MANAFACTURED IN INDIA BIKES? SO THEN CAR MAGS SHOULD NOT CONSIDER IMPORTS IN THEIR REVIEWS, LIKE THE CRV, THE OUTLANDER, THE R8, EVEN THE GRAND SAFARI? PLEASE REVIEWERS, DONT USE WORDS LIKE MEATIEST' SO CARELESSLY... I | Reply

Kahan hai sadke ye Bajaj 220, Karizma ya Yamaha motorcycles ke liye? Marna hai potholed roads pe aur jahan sadke bharee hain motor car, trucks, tempos, etc. se? Or tum ullu ke patthe samajte hain ki 80,000 rupees patak ke apni madangiri dekhange ye motorcycles chala ke. Honda CD 100 ya scooters are yet the best and safe for India. | Reply

Guys guys guys........... R15 is not a stepped down version of R1. The frame design has been borrowed from R1 to let pass more air through the radiator thats fitted in it. But gys do you think it is necessary for a 150cc 4S to have a oil cooler system when a simple forced air cooling is sufficient for a 150cc 2S(man 2S!!!!!!) Bajaj Chetak scooter. You heard it right scooters are 150cc.I have once experienced my friend' R15. It was nice experience but not worth the price tag. I clocked it 0-60kmph in 3.72secs.We then did a street race on NH5 strip(mostly free of traffic) with my pulsar 220. Both clocked 0-60kmph in same time interval. But the acceleration of R15 from 60-120kmph was lesser than pulsar220 and pulsar won by 2secs.The braking of 220 is much better than R15(even though heavier) as a result of zappers in the alloy rims.Overall I will say pulsar is a nice bike and easier to drive on longer rides, whereas R15 can be given the attribute of being a city bike due to its low riding height. | Reply

Bajaj used to manufacture Auto-Rickshaws. And as for HONDA its world wide renowned for manufufacturing F1 cars n Moto GP super bikes .. So the diference between these two companies is like heaven n hell .. So even after several modifications like giving FI n Rear Disc Brakes Bajaj can't even match the simple n plain Karizma .. Without ne such mechanical modifications Karizma is ruling the market for so many years .. N even if Bajaj do put up a real threat to Karizma, Hero Honda will will bring in a new Speed Demon to the indian roads .. Not like Bajaj modifying the same bike for decades n claiming to have done a Miracle .. | Reply

This is for you Sudip, we do not go by the readout on the speedo rather we use our own test data acquisition gear to get the most accurate figure in the absolute scientific manner. When we achieved our top speed, Varad had the speedo model upwards of 150! So I hope you know what we are talking about and I am not surprised with what you have stated as well about your 220 DTS-FI's speedo speed. | Reply

Thinking out of the box has made the Pulsar steal a march once again over its rivals. I think that if the motorcycling cause has to gather mass acclaim, then affordable performance has to be the operating mantra rather than going fully techno like Yamaha did with its superb but priced-out-of-reach R15. If the new Pulsar is even half as good as we think it is, the others should be rethinking their strategy, especially price coupled to true on-road performance. | Reply
