Hyundai recently launched the Equus, a long-wheelbase luxury sedan, which is the largest and most expensive vehicle in the company's portfolio.

Move over BMW 7-Series and Mercedes S-Class, the Koreans are here. Hyundai has just brought out its latest competitor to the luxury limousine title match, an arena which till now has mainly been dominated by the Germans. Called the Equus, this long-wheelbase saloon that was just launched in South Korea is the largest and most expensive vehicle in Hyundai's portfolio. The Equus also brings a level of sophistication and luxury never before seen in the company's line-up.

Like its German rivals it was designed keeping passenger comfort in mind, offering unparalleled levels of interior space and luxury, and even overshadows some of its competition in overall length and rear legroom. Backseat passengers also get to enjoy substantial levels of opulence with the world's first power-driven footrest, seat leg support, relax posture and a massage system. Powering this luxury liner is the most powerful engine ever built for a Hyundai production car - a 5.0 litre V8 motor producing 400PS of power and 500Nm of torque. Hyundai has also developed a bulletproof version of the Equus and has already delivered three cars to the Korean President. Pricing for this stately sedan starts at 70,000 British pounds (Rs. 52 lakh).

They are better off making lunch-boxes like Santro and hidious Tuscon then to be making something like this. | Reply

According to international standards hyundai cars still fare pretty badly. They should first concentrate on buliding the small cars properly and then jump on to something like this! Whomsoever pointed out that koreans are at par with the japanese gotta be kidding. Koreans are nowhere close! | Reply

Hyundai i20 got, 5 Star Euro NCAP Rating. Suzuki, TATA, Mahindra will just dream of this. | Reply

I think Mr. Sid is having some wrong impression about Hyundai being Korean. I'm mostly in Europe and see that more and more people are buying Hyundais' | Reply

Hyundai has got a lot of work to do in this segment as the competition rises streight way to the giant germans(Audi ,BMW , Merc) and americans(Lexus etc). As far as Japanese are concerned Hyundai is better to me because one thing hyundai does better than japs that it doesn't " overpirce " its vehicals and due to new agreements between Indian and Korean govt , the import duties from korea to india have been deducted so we can expect more reasonably priced hyundai vehicles in future while we all know that Japs ( except suzuki ) never reasonably price their vehicle apart from US. The other exciting news is Hyundai is also developing the fully electric and zero emission version of i10 so it may be into Indian market if hyundai tries to localise the ele i10 like they are doing with current i10. | Reply

well, I believe that Hyundai has to come up a brand for its luxury sector. Common rich person would not buy expensive cars from companies like toyota, honda, kia etc., rather go for BMW, Merc or Lexus. Branding characteristics are important to some extend | Reply

Looks good. But its really very difficult to compete with European luxury sedans. Hyundai is better known small and mid-size vehicle segment. | Reply

The writer says that long wheel based saloon "Equus" was recently launched by Hyudai in South Korea. I beg to differ to this statement. I have been driving "Equus" in South Korea for the last 3 years. Brush up the facts Priyadarshan. | Reply

I hate to mention it here that they do secret vehicle recalls here in India. My new i20 has been called by dealer for "free inspection offer" just within 3 weeks of purchase. I got suspicious and asked the reasons. I am told that they have to do "Strapping the Main harness behind the dashboard fuse box so as to provide adequate clearance and prevent any fouling with the accelerator cable end". I was awed by this fault in new vehicle. I feel being cheated by Hyundai not to make such a serious fault PUBLIC and prevent it from media and all. Any more supporters / i20 buyers who have understood this ? | Reply

Hi Rohtibro on what base you think they (koreans/hyundai) are known world wide for their quality? I have been traveling all over and never heard that. I will agree for this for Japanese (Honda / Toyota) though. | Reply

Harish: I totally agree with you. Hyundai is an absolute joke in both Europe and US, even in Singapore. The other practical problem with a Hyundai luxury car is the quality of its dealerships. BMW/Merc dealerships are fine tuned keeping the upper end customers in mind, while Hyundai dealerships are for the lowest end Santro customers so the comfort levels as-well-as attitude of the customer care guys at Hyundai dealership vs Merc/BMW dealership will be entirely different for customers.I dont think a 52L car customer can stand shit at the Hyundai dealership. No hopes for this car... | Reply

gud..tht hyundai..came up..wth some gud luxury saloon....with a price tag of around 52 lakhs i think i can attract a lot of customers who paln to buy a luxury car but cant afford a s class or 7 series...i think germans need to a wry a nit.. | Reply

Hey Vasista.. Who will it be that can afford 52 L car equus but not be able to afford 70L SClass/7Series ?? The buyers of these cars don't go for affordability, they want snob value, luxury and pampering - in that order.. | Reply

yes it is expensive. yes its a korean. So net result it will depreciate faster than a mid range LCD TV. Plus being a Hyundai it will be a terrible handler - all these articles are jokes and marketing gimmicks. Hyundai is a joke - in India people buy it because of cheaper initial costs and since earlier there was no alternative to the Maruti. BTW Hyundai santro overall price basket and service costs is much more than a Maruti Alto/Wagon R. Dunno why Indians put money on Korean piece of @@@!. Only respectable car is the i10 - but priced higher than competitors. It is ridiculous to compare a hyundai with a BMW or Merc. | Reply

i totally agreed with you dude!!! People buys Hundain in india coz of price and no alternative in that pricerange axcept Maruti!!!!otherwise Koreans cant make a car all they can make is a piece of teen!!!!! | Reply

I work for BMW and agree that this car is no comparison to BMW or MB. But your views on Hyundai and its low end Santro is nonsense. What do you mean by "Hyundai is a joke"? Whats make you say that Japanese build better cars than koreans?? Ofcourse thats a bludy joke. | Reply

Harish, then you are not aware of Hyundai's capabilities. I had riden the Equus way back in 1999, in South Korea.... and that time too it was the upper circuit car there. Really do not know as to why this article is stating that this is a new model. It is absolutely in the same class as S or 7 series, and not lower. | Reply
  • Sachin Oommen (18 November 2009 15:43)
Its been a monopoly from the likes of Benz and BMW. I believe this will be a bold move from them. New players have the advantage to experiment more on the asthetic front as compared to the existing forerunners who needs to keep in mind the classic touch and history related to the brand . | Reply
  • tk (18 November 2009 15:38)
TATA can buy Jaguar and Land Rover, corus. Hyundai is making huge progress in recent years. You never know, it may sometime own the so called "good" europian brands. Don't discount them as a joke. | Reply
