Chevrolet Beat spied in Mumbai!

Muntaser Mirkar    9 July 2009

Chevrolet Beat spied in Mumbai!

GM India's promised small car for the Indian market seems ready to go! We caught a camouflaged Beat doing the rounds in Mumbai recently.

Spark LPG

Pardon the extremely poor picture quality, but this is all I could manage with my now-kaput camera phone driving into Mumbai in the middle of heavy traffic and the wrath of pouring monsoons. It was late evening as I spotted a camouflaged car getting bigger in my RVMs. As it pulled closer the size of the car was evident and so was the shape. The Gujarat temp registration confirmed it in the end - this was the Beat - all set to make its Indian debut in August.

Chevrolet Beat spied in Mumbai!

While most of the car was covered with black sheets that hid the true shape of the headlights, fenders and roof, the generous wind blowing provided glimpses of the led tail lights and the general shape of the body apart from some very impressive design features. First off are the muscular wheel arches and the way the glasshouse curves downward ahead of the B-pillars. The car seemed like it was spacious enough - there were three men already in the car and the guy at the back seemed to be quite relaxed. The rear end is quirky as it was in the concept, but then that's something that really impressed - the fact that the actual production version is so close to the way the concept looks. In fact, that aspect dawned on me when I managed to take a peek inside the cabin. The instrument cluster id far from conventional - with a cylindrical analog meter which most probably is the tachometer and a flat block beside it that could house the speedo and tell tale lights. The interiors were lively and well appointed.

Chevrolet Beat spied in Mumbai!

The way the Beat was zipping in and out of traffic speaks loads of its in-city capabilities. And with three full-grown adults in the car the test mule was extremely zippy and fast as well - meaning performance should be good.

The Spark is doing good for GM in India with the little hatch being the main sales driver. The Beat will add great perspective to the Chevrolet portfolio in the country as it does battle with established hatchback heavyweights like the Suzuki Swift, Indica Vista, Hyundai i20, etc. We reckon the Beat will have an added advantage though - it's got roof rails!

Cost factor will decide the future of Chevy BEAT, since it has to compete with i10 and ritz to dominate the market | Reply
  • Manu (19 December 2009 14:14)
I think the beat shouldnt be priced more than 4 lakhs for the high end model because chevrolet has always given Indian markets 2nd grade cars... so its the case with the beat as well but anyways they should play safe with the price of beat otherwise it will fall flat on their face... looks are okay.. but I feel the nissan micra looks better which is coming soon as well.. | Reply
  • kams (19 December 2009 13:57)
Uhm I think the looks are okay but with hyundai and maruti dominating the markets with proven records beat shouldnt be priced around 3.5 lakhs to 4.5 lakhs ex showroom Delhi.. the only way this car will do better than maruti A star, i10 is if their price is kept somewhere close to spark.. somehow the chevrolet looks vulnerable for Indian markets.. | Reply

Official Launch of Chevy Beat is going to be in auto expo pragati maidan new delhi on 4th jan 2010. It will be available in 3 varients and 4th varient will be with ABS, Air Bag and and Alloy Wheels pricing would be somewhere aroud Rs 3.50 to 4.50 ex showroom Delhi. Great Stylish looks, very fresh interiors. Will give tough Competetion to i-10, ritz. | Reply
  • Mohit (15 December 2009 11:14)
i suppose they are goin gto price it simila to ritz, driving essence no doubt will surpass others in league and will stand by fiat in driving comfort ,if priced well 16 valve petrol can be hit. | Reply
  • James (14 December 2009 22:06)
back door handle is place just next to the window glass.. which is the worst thing i have ever seen.. saw this car in my apartment where he works for the company and had bought it for test.. not appealing in the country where Maruti is domination... should wait for the price.. | Reply

It takes good after sales support to change the Game and beat Maruti or Hyundai. Most Indians dont by car looking at design features and Awards. You need value for money and optimal running cost which includes maint | Reply

Will hot up the competition in premium hatch segment. So far we have seen Fabia, i20 and Jazz but all three are over priced hatch and are not able to challange the Swift. Recently launched Punto is diesel is not peppy buy petrol is good and priced competetively close to Swift. New Avtar of Indica also looks handsom but I am skeptical about other things. If priced right then Beat can not only challenge the Swift but have the potential to become segment leader. In my views with 1.4 or 1.3 liter engine this is going to cost some where between 3.9 to 5.2 ( Basic to top variant). With looks and safety feature, add ons such as integrated music, ABS, keyless entry (if provided) this is my best bet. So far other hatch are not closer to Swift. If it delivers 22Km/lt then awesome. Hope to get one around year end. | Reply

I have not seen Beat or the new to be released small segment car by GM. But I have been using GM car for last 1.5 years. My only concern is its service and quality of parts. I am totally dissatisfied with my experience and dealing with GM. It has really let me down and made me change my perception towarsd the company as a whole. The new car could be a good car, but can GM in India handle the service, spares and support of the car. The GM promise is not what I have experienced. | Reply

Well, I got to see this car in delhi pragati maidan (don't ask how) and have seen the full exteriors and interios, The car is an absolute stunner and having looked Ritz, A-Star and i10 well, its a refreshing change. It beats all other cars in the premium hatch (3.6L to 5.0L) category. A real futuristic car. To me this is the only futuristic hatch car to have come after swift in indian market. Dimensionally looks like it is little smaller than swift but i am sure GM will price it lower than swift and ritz probably little higher than A-star. | Reply

Chevrolet BeatLaunch: Mid 2009Will cost: Rs 3 lakh onwardsThe Beat was introduced as a concept at the 2007 New York International Auto Show, and can be seen as an evolution of GM's current international small car, the Spark(known as the Matiz around the world).Designed in South Korea and powered by a 1.2- litre turbocharged petrol engine, theBeat paves the way for a new generation small cars and might just be the newaffordable-small-peppy car for young India. Although the production version will differa lot from the radical concept seen in pictures, one can expect the baby Chevy tochange GM's fortunes in India. | Reply
