BMW had showcased the Pininfarina-designed Gran Lusso Coupe concept back in 2013 that had hinted at the revival of the 8 Series which had been a part of BMW’s product lineup. The rumours have now been confirmed as spy images of a camouflaged coupe have been spotted for the first time. The test mule on reaching its production stage will be seen competing against the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe.

Judging from the spy images, the coupe sports a long sleek design when seen from the side. The swept-back headlamps and the signature kidney grille go well with the overall profile of the car. The roof of the coupe smoothly drops towards the tail that ends with a small embedded lip spoiler on the trunk. At the back, the coupe gets dual trapezoidal exhaust tips that complete the overall look of the vehicle at the back.

Although currently in the testing stage, it is likely that BMW will use the prowerplant and transmission from the 7 Series to power the luxurious 8 Series. The car will possibly be offered with a 3.0-litre inline-6 turbo, 4.4-litre bi-turbo V8 and a plug-in hybrid. For the ‘M Power’ variant, BMW might just drop in a V12 motor to top it off. On the equipment front, the 8 Series will come loaded with some high-tech gear such as the gesture control for the infotainment display and other driver assisting systems from the 7 Series.

The word is that by the year 2019 or 2020, the production-ready model of the 8 Series would be revealed by the manufacturer. A convertible version of the 8 Series is also likely to be introduced in the future.
