After a month long break, Formula 1 action restarted at the Belgian Grand Prix where Jenson Button took home a well deserved victory and 25 points

Button bounces back

Jenson Button put in a stunning lap to claim pole during qualifying and capped it with an even better performance in the race itself. It was all evident that the McLaren driver had come to terms with his MP4-27. In the race, the Brit’s pace was unmatched as he blitzed away to a lights to finish victory. The McLaren team had opted for a single-stop strategy, which worked wonders for the 2009 champion. The Woking based team was spot-on with their pit stops which they have perfected in the last few races.

First corner chaos

Pastor Maldonado was already off the grid before the lights went out. At the very first corner, Romain Grosjean brushed Lewis Hamilton’s car’s front left tyre. The McLaren driver lost control and rear-ended Grosjean’s Lotus E20 which went airborne and landed atop championship leader Fernando Alonso’s car, who was lucky to escape unhurt. Sergio Perez who qualified in fourth place was also a victim of the pile-up, being forced to retire. Grosjean has been penalised with a single race ban and a fine of €50,000 for his over ambitious manoeuvre.

Vettel takes second

A single-stop strategy worked well for Sebastian Vettel, as he gained nine places to finish second. The reigning champion drove smartly to avoid the chaos in the first corner and constantly gained positions to take the second step on the podium ahead of Raikkonen. Although Raikkonen drove brilliantly but a two-stop strategy wasn’t enough to get him a better result.
