First Drive: new Estilo

Test Drive Maruti Suzuki Estilo

Story and Photography: Vikram Gour

Maruti-Suzuki-Estilo-Reviews-img1

In a day and age where model makeovers have been just a sticker job and some added accessories, the work done on the new Estilo are really worth commending. Vikram Gour takes the car out for a quick spin to come back rather impressed by this little machine.

Before I get ranting and raving about the new Estilo, lets take a walk down memory lane. In November of 2006, Maruti Suzuki pulled the plug on the Zen, which was a neat jellybean shaped hatchback that had risen to cult status as it was the only hot-hatch around. To replace it, Maruti Suzuki introduced the Zen Estilo in December 2006. The Estilo was a far cry from the hot hatch design and instead it was actually a tall boy! Maruti thought it would be a good idea to carry over the 'Zen' brand name as this would lend a brand connect to this new car. The Zen Estilo however was more like a refurbished Wagon R and the two cars even shared the same engine and gearbox. Basically the Zen Estilo failed to make a mark of living up to the cult status of the Zen and without the aura of the Zen, the new car literally went through a bit of an identity crisis.

Honda Accord

Without the flair or the aura, the Zen Estilo was under pressure from enthusiasts and car buyers alike. The only mistake on Maruti's part being that they tried to carry over a brand name that had a very strong impression of being fast, zippy and young, and they took that and stamped it onto a car that was not any of those words! The Zen Estilo was stylish, at the time, however, its vague gearbox and non exciting image didn't do anything to aid the brand. Now, don't get me wrong, it was not a disaster in terms of money when looking at the sales charts, for it was able to clock total sales of over 1 lakh units in its life span. In fact the Zen Estilo settled down to a steady 3,000 units sold month on month. The loss that I speak of was in terms of a brand name and the Estilo had to live up to being 'just another small car.'

Maruti-Suzuki-Estilo-Reviews-img2

All that is set to change now, for Maruti has taken painstaking efforts to right a wrong, and in doing so they have started from the beginning. First things first, they've dropped the 'Zen' tag, so the new car is now just the Estilo. Okay, there is still a badge on the rear that says 'Zen', but all the communication and marketing efforts are towards just calling the new car the Estilo. Secondly they've addressed everything that made the Estilo 'just another car' and now the new car boasts of a soul of its own.

Starting with the exteriors, the sculptors at Maruti Suzuki came alive and did a commendable job of livening up the front. Gone are the flat-pan looks, for the front now comes with redesigned headlights that are in line with the Suzuki family design (read as Swift, Ritz and A-Star). The car also has a new grill that almost smiles at you and a bold new bumper with integrated fog lamps that have a 'sculpted look'. The front fenders have also been revised slightly. Overall the front fascia gets a muscular overtone that does brighten up the front end of the car as well as lends towards a younger personality. The side and rear have not received too much in terms of changes, however subtle modifications such as the revised OVRMs, door claddings and new wheel covers do add to the element of change on the Estilo.

The interiors are pretty much the same and the beige color expression is carried over from the outgoing model. Subtle changes however include a new seat fabric, a two tone dash, rear parcel tray and a digital fuel indicator. The touch screen JVC stereo system is an accessory and does not come as standard on the car (however it was available on my test car and it's a worthy piece of equipment, if you have the moolah to put down for it!).

Maruti-Suzuki-Estilo-Reviews-img3

Seating is convenient for a small family, thanks to the tall boy stance there is enough knee room in the rear as well. For the driver, it's a very upright seating position which allows for a good view of the road, but for someone who is above 6 feet tall, it might be a slightly tight fit.

The biggest change and the best aspect of the new Estilo however does not lie in the new lines or fresh fabric, but under the hood. Gone is the 1.1 litre mill that also does duty in the Wagon R as Maruti has gone ahead and given the Estilo a more contemporary heart. Powering the new Estilo is the KB10 Series engine that also does duty in the A-Star.

The KB 10B engine is a 998cc, 3 cylinder unit that has a high compression ratio of 10:1 and delivers 68PS @ 6200 rpm and a noteworthy torque of 90Nm@3500 rpm. Its peppy nature is more suitable for a young car like the Estilo. The lightweight aluminium engine boasts of low NVH levels, enhanced fuel efficiency and linear performance throughout the powerband. In fact according to ARAI tests, the Estilo is set to return a fuel average of 18.2 kilometers to the litre.

Bought Estilo lxi in March 2010. Finished 2000 km today. The drive has been amazing. Went on long highway drives twice. The pickup and high speed handling is really good considering this has a tall boy design. In city the mileage with AC is 15-17km/L considering very sedate driving style (didn't rip the engine in city due to traffic and road conditions) . on highways with high speed driving and AC on i recorded 16km/L. The suspension is fantastic. ran over a pot hole and a speed braker at close to 40kmph but the car handled it really well. The first oil change is scheduled at 10000km which speakes of the engine refinement. overall i would recommend this car to anyone who wants to buy a good, fast hatchback at reasonable price point. | Reply

Purchased estilo on 5th Dec09 and till date hve a run of 1800 km and getting an awesome average of around 20 km/lt in city and around 26 km/lt on highway. Intially considered a-star to purchase as I want to stick to K-series KB10 Engine for mileage But not felt comfortable and turned to estilo. My aim to get descent mileage satisfied. Dealer said after 3000 km and second service it mileage has scope to improve then really i will be delightful | Reply

Hi, It is truly shocking to hear the mileage your Estilo delivers. I would request you to recheck the figures as ARAI had given on 18kmpl. | Reply
Manish m goswami (19 April 2010 20:52) Reply to Raghu Velicheti
It is indeed giving a mileage on that figure. The k-series engine(KB10 and not k12m) combined with yur driving skills delivers that figure.I am not only a customer to get the mileage but also other using new estilo getting the same | Reply

Maruthi Suzuki SX4 is a thrilling machine to drive... Once on the highways you wont feel that you are behind anyone... its high performance petrol engine also provides high torque making it easily drivable in the city. If you are a person with not so a shallow pocket go for it.....also it offers high end climate control air conditioner.... which is unique to its class...audio controls on the steering makes it much easier for the driver while driving...so as an overall package SX4 is worth buying....take a test drive and feel it for yourself...compared with estilo,sx4 is a best choice | Reply

maruti screwed up a well entrenched brand like ZEN. What they should have done is plonked the 1.3 esteem engine, wider tyres and a little face lift to the old bean mean machine and it would have outsold. Zen Estilo, Estilo whatever...is very close to W R design and does not have that look to begin with. As they say, sometimes dont fix it if it aint broken. MUL is learning the hard way....They also killed a good brand such as Baleno by firstly overpricing the car and then replacing it with a dud machine sx4. The current revamped avtaar of sx4 i can see selling similar numbers such as the old estilo...they cannot even get their advertising right, the sx4 commercial on tv is totally chauvinistic. | Reply

1.3 l esteem engine will soon be replaced by the K series one becuase of emission norms. Had they put in the 1.3 L esteem engine, then from next year onwards there sales wud have been zero. | Reply

I guess the move to get the makeover done was to outdo the nano similarity in the front end, two yrs frm now if we have lots of nanos around it will be difficult to make out which one is which NANO/ESTILO. Good job on the exterior now it has its own identity. Its been long since its launched but hard to find on roads these days. | Reply

I don't know why mine, booked on 23rd Sep, is still not delivered. Dealer says Ecru beige colour in Vxi not came out of factory yet. No response from Maruti Helpline on complaint. This is really rediculous and now you say that you still can't find many Estilos on road. | Reply

I have Zen Estillo LXi which was bought in Aug 2007. The gear shift is disappointing and so is the milage. I converted the car to LPG within 6 months and get a milage of 10 Km/ltr on LPG. I have never got more than 13 kms/ltr on petrol. This milage is with the Air conditioning switched on. The space on the front cowling has a very steep incline towards the windshield which is a sheer wastage of space. The Drivers seat has a metal frame base which hurts the lower back while driving . I drive for close to 75 kms per day. I personally would never recommend this car to anyone and regret buying this car. | Reply
 vijayendra s (17 January 2010 22:56) Reply to Akash
The zen estillo lxi you bought is aug 2007 model and the model launched which is all new estilo is of aug 2009 which has 18.2 kmpl according to ARAI. So is totally different model you are talking about and for your kind information LPG kits reduces average of the car so always think twice before you do something different to your car. Its also against the norms of car manufacturing. | Reply

Guys I took a test drive yesterday with my wife. I dont quite understand the logic of leaving so much of space that too sloping down on the front cowling. The rear seats are simply uncomfortable. the car drives good and better gear shifting than wagon R. | Reply

Hi guys, I got the new Estilo just 2 months back. The front seats are like ok for me though they are not bucket seats. But rear seat is worser than an AUTO RICKSHAW's. Two persons cant even sit comfortably. And elders cant even think of sitting. The worst design i ve ever seen. I do not know why they ve elevated the rear seat so high and why they ve given so much extra space behind the rear seat, when the rear seat has space problems? Only the idiot who has designed this car can answer to this. I m not understanding how do i sell this car now. | Reply

I agree with you, I bought new estilo in Jan 2010 and Iam very happy with it. Good head and leg space. got a milage of 18 on highway. New k series engine is good. Boot space is also quite good as compared with Astar. The only issue I faced was that there was a play in rear seat locking mechanism, which maruti service center guys fixed it. Great car overall.

Congrats for ur new car. i also want to purchase car and i have finally zeroed down to new estillo and spark.driving pleasure in spark is much better than new estilo even if it has new K-series engine(may be it is due to missing of 1 pot .But new estilo is spacious in comparision to spark and supported with strong service network. The main isssue with new estillo is that the engine is too much noisy and Harshness increase when u go beyond 80 kmph. Also when fully loaded the engine refuses to move smoothly.Definitely its pickup is not as good as i found in spark. So I am going for spark although new estilo is better family car. | Reply

Zen Estilo - What a car..I bought LXi in Nov 2007, so for very smooth driving, no maintenance hassles.. I drove on highways and got healthy 19KMPL milaege...however on city road performance is poor ...hardly 12 KMPL...I drive it on Bangalore City so no matter my car just run an avg speed of 15-20 KMPH with periodic bumps on every 200-300 mtrs distance...Thanks to metro management...the most innovative method of controlling speed on City roads...Overall Zen Estilo is worth to buy..AC cools like I am on north pole...pick up is on par or much betther than any other car in this segment...double toned interior is gives an amazing rich look...Best fit for family like Mia/ Bibi aur two kids...rear passengers some time suffer if driver or front co-passgenger pull back their seats to get comfortable leg space...I am in love with it...What else to say...Enjoy driving Zen Estilo if you plan to buy one... | Reply

  • m m wani (11 October 2009 21:09)
If anybody wants true rear space comfort then tata indica or indica vista is best in small car segment follwed by i10.Even in RITZ by paying so much amount of money u still wiil be deprived of rear space comfort.Maruti people say that RITZ is roomy and spacious. But tall boy design gives u just ''feeling" of roomyness and not true rear space comfort because rear space comfort comes in by having greater width at the rear which is absent in the RITZ..So it will be foolish decision if someone goes for RITZ for want of rear space comfort only. | Reply
  • Srinidhi (11 October 2009 01:28)
Hey Ranjeet, I would suggest go for Ritz if u r not very keen on the looks. I too nearly booked a new estilo, its no doubt a very good but if u r looking at the comfort of the people sitting at the rear seat, go for Ritz as the price diff between Estilo Vxi and Ritz Vxi is only abt 50K. I have booked Ritz Vxi and getting delivered in another 2 days. Estilo has bench seat at the rear making it a kind of punishment seating(i just meant that one will have to sit straight like metro buses) for the people sitting at the back. This problem is not there in Santro. But even the New Santro is too old a car to buy unless u still ve the passion for it. Think abt Ritz Vxi or Lxi if u r a family man............... | Reply

The only problem is when you shift to 5th gear and want to come 4th it doesn't, you have to go to neutral and then 3rd. I do not know whether anybody else had this same experience. | Reply

DENNISH, before purchasing your wow car pl. check the noisiness of the engine.the engine sounds noisy even when the vehicle is at idle. Moreover when ac is switched on the noise increases too much which feels irritating. This is not expected from k10b series engine which is supposed to be much more refined. This is to ensure that you WOW car should not turn out tobe NO CAR after purchasing. | Reply

Want to buy a car on low price..? Go for All new ESTILO. Wow!! I did a test ride and booked the same. You people can have a great ride on it. Great pick up, stunning looks! And the most advantage is the gear. You need not have to struggle with the gear. While during the transmission of the gear, the gear clicks into its position by itself. A new technology for the gearing system.(DPT-Detent Pin Technology). You just have a touch on it. Its enough. It will get you to the gear you are desired to put. And another advantage is the tubeless tyres. Even if a pin or something punchers your vehicle tyres, it looks lik puncher only when it is at rest and you can ride it at a range of 60 to 80 Kmph without any fear. It automatically pumps when it is on ride. So you don't have the work of doing circus with stephenie. You can bring your vehicle to the shop and later you can change the tyre and can get ready with the punchered tyre. And coming to the interior part, it is so good to look at. Keeps you cool, comfort and happy. But the back seaters seat is some what congested for 3 members. But so comfortable for 2. In the co-drivers seat there is so spacious to spread you legs. No knee pain. Exterior is amazing as you can see. And the vehicle never shakes if you are speeding across a bus or a lorry. It the main thing you have to observe while buying a vehicle. So no tension for that in estilo. There is more space for the luggage at the back.. What else you desire from this small car? Great car. Thinking of buying this? Then don't think much. You will be satisfied with your amount you are paying. Its so worthy. Have a great buy. Good luck... ;-) | Reply

Why Does Maruti Suzuki still uses the ZEN badge on the rear of the new Estillo when it says it has done away with the ZEN.Guess it still wants to ride on the image that the eldest Zen had created in the market and which none of its lineage can ever repeat.Old ZEN was the best, nothing can beat it, no style, no Estillo!!! | Reply

The old version of Zen Estillo is pretty good and I now been using it for more than 2 years. It has the punch and can take a bit of ruogh handling on Indian roads. I feel its value for money. Gives me 17 kmpl if I dont use the AC, with the AC it gives 14-15 kmpl which is not bad as well. Gear box does give a bit of a problem, but it can be fixed. Overall a good drive. | Reply

Even though i cannot complain much about the reliability or performance, i would like to switch over to Hyundai/Tata model cars. I strongly feel that Maruti Engineers cannot design eye-catching beauties.....Ritz, A-Star and Swift although good, caanot compete with i10/ i 20 in looks department. Can you plesae enlighten me on hyundai models i10 /i20 in terms of perfromance and reliability comparing with its Maruti counterparts? | Reply

I have the old Zen Estillo and have driven it for 17000 Kms now. An unbiased feedback from me is it is a good choice for a first car, it's made for smooth driving and is excellent in that part. Infact my neighbours owning i10 take my car for a ride....its a good value for money car and if you leave aside your prejudice and give the new baby a chance I am sure it will serve you well !!! | Reply

The model upgrade is just another way to restore prices to original levels. The outgoing zen estillo was being offered at a cash discount of Rs15,000/- in addition to loyalty bonus of Rs15,000/-. While the new estillo prices were jacked up by Rs10,000/-, cash discounts withdrawn and to beat it all no loyalty bonus if you exchange your existing maruti for the new estillo! These pricing gimicks were ok in the good old days of Ambi/Premier, I doubt it will work today. MUL its a wake up call! | Reply

This is regd Mr.TR Mogul's comments on 18 September 2009. Maruti used to take customers for a ride till the time they launched Swift. Now, by replacing the old Esteem with Swift Dzire, and by launching A-Star, Ritz, and now the new Estilo, I feel the folks at Maruti are bothered to give more to customers. However, we must agree that maruti more often than not does the catching-up job. Next point is, as Getz could not hold its own, “Hyundai are sacking the Getz”. And the STEEPLY priced I-20 is in the league of Fabia and Jazz. So, I fail to see the point Mr.Mogul is making here, aginst Estilo or Maruti. Then, on reliability front, as we do not see the highways and city roads full of broken down Maruti cars, I would assume Maruti cars are ok on reliability. What intrigues me the most is, Mr.Mogul could not appreciate A-Star's look, but applauds his old 800. Once I heard someone saying Uno was better looking than the original Zen. Ha Ha Ha Ha !!! | Reply
  • TR Mogul (18 September 2009 00:27)
Having had a Maruti for 16 years ( 2 cars)....of terrific reliability....I was looking forward to getting a new Maruti replacement, as well as an upgrade from my trusty 800. However my loyalty took a hammering when not even one of the new cars... A Star, Ritz, or any other from the present Maruti stable could match the looks of any of the competition. Seems like the designers failed to realise that when one pays a good sum for a car....a new owner also wants a car that will turn heads, and make the neighbour jealous. It is an asset one looks for. Just compare the Estilo to the Getz for example It is NO match in the looks department, and Hyundai are sacking the Getz shortly. If you compare it to the i 20, it is a NO CONTEST. Wake up Maruti.....reliability will only get you that far. Have not heard of any complaints from Hyundai owners either regarding reliability. If one reads the reviews in the UK web sites, the Hyundai has received glowing all round reports. .... and they are the same Indian made i 20's. All the present models of Maruti look like the back has been chopped off !!! They are not hatchbacks, but flatbacks !! It tells its own story when to my eyes, the good old 800 is still the best looker in the Maruti stable. At best the SX 4 looks nice too...but thats it. Sorry Maruti...I am deserting !! Your loyalty bonus is not enough for me to opt for any of your new models. | Reply

change is the way of life. Tall boy design is much more practical than the crawling old zen. I am pretty sure that out of every 100 people who cry for old zen, wouldn't have bought it even if it is available today. There are options available like swift and astar. Estilo is a very capable car but some people are prejudiced about it. Tall boy, new look, nice gearbox and frugal K-series engine - all this at a very reasonable pricing. can't you appreciate it? if you don't like there are many who do. Maruti sold 1Lakh old estilo in 3 years and this is not a small number considering competition. Old zen is gone. GER OVER IT. MOVE ON WITH LIFE. | Reply

Zen estillo is very very cramped for the rear passenger and very narrow hence sitting side to side on the front seats too can make you uncomfortable at times. I could find no reason for fazing one of the tope selling models, the Zen, and then replacing with Estilo, and then trying to provide wrong things right. I think they should relaunch the earlier Zen, and may take out the Estilos. I don't think the facelift will be able to assist them anymore in improving sales of Estilo. exterior looks of the new model appeals even less than the previous model - the main reason is that it slightly has the look of an alto from the front except for the headlights. The rear and the sides are the same. As far as the engine is concerned, 4 PS addition may not be a big booster. However, if one goes by fuel efficiency, it is better in this model. | Reply
