Ever since Maruti revealed the concept for a new compact SUV at the 2012 Auto Expo, there has been a buzz about what it has to offer in this segment. Interestingly, Ford also showcased a concept at the same event which later transpired into the largely successful EcoSport. Though Maruti has extended the wait for its new product, a launch seems to be on the cards as the car has often been spied testing on Indian roads. As a result of the latest such episode, the curtain has been lifted over the interiors of the Maruti Suzuki XA Alpha, codenamed YBA.
The dashboard broadly resembles the one from the carmaker’s S-cross, predominantly black with mounted controls and a 7-inch SmartPlay system, speculated to come with Apple CarPlay that made its debut with the Baleno. Leather seats fail to make an appearance but could still be expected to feature at the launch.
Mechanically, the vehicle could borrow its mill from Maruti’s current line-up - 1.3-litre DDiS200 diesel with SHVS or with 1.2-litre VVT petrol. The transmission is expected to be chosen between the standard 5-speed MT, while CVT from Baleno may also make its way into YBA.
The new car will go up against the Ford Ecosport, Renault Duster and the Hyundai Creta. To keep a check on the price, the YBA is said to be based on the existing Maruti Suzuki Swift platform and would qualify for the sub-4 metre excise benefit, helping it to be rated between Rs 6-9 lakh.
