Maruti Suzuki is already working on a BS6 variant of the current Vitara Brezza

  • Maruti Suzuki has used this strategy before with the Ertiga being an Arena offering and the XL6 a more premium Nexa offering.
  • Toyota plans to bring a rebadged next-gen Brezza by 2022 as part of its partnership with Suzuki.
  • Expect the petrol Brezza variant to come before the next-gen Brezza.

Maruti Suzuki has been hard at work in preparing the Vitara Brezza compact SUV with a petrol heart since the fate of the 1.3-litre DDIS unit is more or less sealed.  It is likely to get the BS6-compliant version of the 1.5-litre K15B from the Ertiga MPV. And we expect it to launch soon, most likely at the upcoming Auto Expo 2020. Besides this, the carmaker is also preparing its next iteration of the compact SUV. And now reports suggest that it could be offered in the Arena, Nexa as well as a Toyota rebadged trim.

Maruti Suzuki is no stranger to  this strategy as it has offered the Ertiga via the Arena retail channel and the XL6 as a more premium Nexa offering. This time however, in addition to this, the Vitara Brezza will also get a Toyota rebadge owing to the partnership between Suzuki and Toyota. The rebadged next-gen Vitara Brezza is expected to launch in 2022 after Maruti introduces its iterations.

The partnership between Suzuki and Toyota became a reality in 2017 with an agreement to collaborate on developing EVs. Since then it has been extended to acquiring each others shares and sharing its platforms and vehicles to each other. The first result was the Toyota Glanza, which is essentially a rebadged Maruti Baleno. Aside from the rebadged Vitara Brezza, a rebadged iteration of the Ertiga MPV as well as the Ciaz sedan are in the works. Maruti Suzuki is also planning on introducing  a rebadged Toyota Corolla in India. The two companies are also jointly developing a C-segment SUV as a part of this collaboration.

We'll have to wait for further news on the next-gen Brezza as the carmaker’s current focus is on making its entire lineup, including the Vitara Brezza, BS6 compliant. Expect the petrol Brezza to take on the likes of the Ford EcoSport, Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV3OO once launched in India.
