Maruti Suzuki’s new Ignis is quite an eye catching crossover. This rugged but friendly offering is due to be launched in January 2017 and features many striking design highlights. And as it turns out, the design is the culmination of a lot of elements from some great cars from Suzuki's rich and illustrious automotive history. So what are Suzuki’s heroes from the past that the Ignis carries with it?
1) Suzuki triad: The shark gill like three slats on the Ignis’ C-pillars are quite hard to miss. They help break up the mass of metal, which would have otherwise been quite an eyesore. Maruti Suzuki calls these stamped lines as the Suzuki triad. According to Suzuki these “slits” were first seen on the C-pillar of the Fronte Coupe, Japan’s first mini-sports car.
2) Blacked out A and B Pillars: Yes, you guessed it. When viewing the Ignis from the side, just block out the rest of the car and look at the glass area; immediately the Ignis’ connection to the Swift will be apparent. The blacked out A and B-pillars give along with the pulled back roof give it a floating-roof look.
3) Headlamps in grille: The Ignis’ angry look is a result of those big LED DRLS and headlamp units sitting inside the grille enclosure. This aspect, Suzuki say was first used on the first generation Cervo. The Cervo sure wouldn’t mind some of the Ignis’ LED mojo for sure.
4) Bonnet Cutout: The little strip of rubber that is embedded on the bonnet is also a connection to Suzuki’s past. This time though it isn’t a sports car. Its an SUV, finally! And the inspiration in this case is the first generation Vitara!
