Maruti Ciaz Expert Review

2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift First Drive ZigWheels

What's always more difficult than getting to the top is staying there. Take the Ciaz for example. Maruti Suzuki got third time lucky because, in India's second most sought after sedan segment, the Ciaz was their first winner.

But since it was launched, we've seen new arrivals like the Yaris, rebirths like the Verna and revisions like the City facelift, all of which have brought something new to the table. Simply put, the competition wasn't making life easy, so the Ciaz had to keep up. And it has, with the 2018 facelift. So are these just a few token tweaks or do we have new reasons to buy the Ciaz?

Looks

https://media.zigcdn.com/media/content/2018/May/city_vs_verna_vs_yarisimg_2092_720x540.jpg

Facelifts are often either too subtle to differentiate or so over the top that you have to ask, “Oh God, why?” But with the new Ciaz, Maruti's struck a good balance. It's sharper, more distinctive and while you can tell it's the Ciaz, enough heads will turn to assure you that you're driving something new.

While the Alivio facelift (Alivio = Ciaz in China) took a leaf out of Lexus’ handbook and got a grille big enough to have its own pin code, the new Ciaz does the opposite.

2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift First Drive ZigWheels

Its face sports a sleeker grille that drops the old quad-chrome slats for two slim chrome accents. Even the fog lamps get new and more aggressively styled enclosures. All of this comes together to make the Ciaz look less business-like and sportier.

2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift First Drive ZigWheels

It bedazzles too with not just LED projector headlights and DRLs but also, LED fog lights. Neat!

2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift First Drive ZigWheels

The side profile remains largely identical, save for the new wheel designs. With no change in dimensions, the Ciaz is still the longest car in its segment, so the badi gaadi look stays uncorrupted.

2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift First Drive ZigWheels

It's at the rear that you get a throwback to the original Ciaz concept car. The revised tail light clusters now sport LED stripes, adding a dash of flash to an otherwise simple looking rear. There's even some chrome around the rear reflectors which should tickle the Indian taste just right.

Interiors

2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift First Drive ZigWheels

While the exterior is snazzier and new, the interior hasn't really changed. It's still the only car in the segment with enough cabin space to make the Honda City nervous and a big 510-litre boot to match.

2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift First Drive ZigWheels

Also, while the interior is more functional than funky, it's classy nonetheless. However, look closer and you spot a few experience enhancers. Rear seat owners, a big demographic for the Ciaz, will be happy to note that the sedan now gets adjustable rear headrests.

2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift First Drive ZigWheels

Apart from the new faux wood, you also notice that the right side stalk of the steering wheel isn't blank anymore. That’s because the Ciaz now gets cruise control.

2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift First Drive ZigWheels

Also, petrol Ciaz buyers get a cool new instrument cluster, complete with a 4.2-inch TFT colour MID. Apart from the usual trip info, range and average fuel efficiency readouts, it now features some cool displays too. There's the power/torque graphical display we've seen in the Baleno, a graph showing your acceleration and braking patterns and another that shows the SHVS system in action like we've seen in proper hybrids like the Camry and Accord.

2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift First Drive ZigWheels

Why is this MID exclusive to the petrol Ciaz? Well, because the SHVS here is a first since this new system adds a lithium-ion battery to the equation. It's also why the 2018 Ciaz petrol got so much more expensive. The lithium-ion battery is an import, at least until the Suzuki-Toshiba battery factory in Gujarat is operational.

2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift First Drive ZigWheels

This battery enables better energy storage during brake energy regeneration and more torque assist during acceleration. And that's not all that's new in the petrol Ciaz.

Engine & Performance

2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift First Drive ZigWheels

New look and added features aside, a big new addition is the K15B 1.5-litre petrol engine that makes 105PS and 138Nm of torque.

This more powerful yet more efficient motor should be cause for celebration. But let's get one thing straight. The old 1.4 isn't a bad engine by any measure. Bland, sure, but very usable. So we're checking if the old positives have been retained (or improved upon) while hoping for some gaps to be sealed.

2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift First Drive ZigWheels

First, the good news. Even with the new, more powerful engine, the Ciaz is as easy to drive in the city as ever. The low-end torque is strong and you can comfortably manage daily commutes without having to cross 2000rpm. The initial gearing is on the taller side too, so you don't have to work the gearbox too much to have enough grunt to keep chugging along. Also, since the output gains (12.5PS and 8Nm) aren't biblical, accelerating hard is still a pretty drama-free affair. Performance gains are smooth, gradual and predictable, not spiky. This motor is also in its element while cruising. Set the newly added cruise control anywhere between 80-100kmph and it's calming to drive, ticking over at 2000-2300rpm.

2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift First Drive ZigWheels

But while the old traits have been retained, the mid-range performance still isn't where you'd want it to be for a premium sedan. For instance, say you're cruising in the rightmost lane at about 80kmph in 5th. If the car ahead of you slows down and forces you to tap the brakes, you will have to shift down to 4th to keep pace or face the angry dippers and honks of traffic behind you. So high speed overtakes warrant quite a bit of planning, a downshift and revving the engine beyond 3000rpm, especially if you've got passengers on board. Is the new engine better? Sure, but the gains are minor so we can't call this a tangible improvement.

2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift First Drive ZigWheels

However, there's a fine distinction to make here. The Ciaz isn't underpowered. It just lacks the enthusiasm and highway effortlessness you'd expect from a car in this segment. The outside is wow but at its heart, the Ciaz petrol just wants to be a hassle-free commuter and we honestly don't see that being a problem for most, especially when the claimed fuel efficiency is better than before.

2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift First Drive ZigWheels

It's a similar story with the Ciaz petrol AT as well. It too gets the new engine but the same 4-speed AT as before. It now gets ESP as standard too.

This transmission, too, is best suited for commuting. Although the gear changes are smooth, they are noticeable and not lighting quick. The best way to use it is with light throttle inputs and an understanding that this is no enthusiast-pleaser.

2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift First Drive ZigWheels

With part-throttle inputs, the Ciaz auto hits 40-50kmph quickly and upshifts around 2000rpm, which is the engine’s sweet spot.

Go hard on the throttle and the kickdown is accompanied with a little jerk. Sadly, there aren't any paddle shifters. Maruti should have at least equipped it with a manual mode, which would've been handy on the highway in particular. Like in the manual, you will find yourself downshifting for overtakes at high speeds.

2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift First Drive ZigWheels

Overall, there isn't much to be said about this automatic transmission. It'll get the job done but isn't as competent as its CVT, DSG or torque converter-equipped rivals.

Other Small Changes

2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift First Drive ZigWheels

Maruti has also integrated some small but significant features to make the Ciaz a better package. Rear parking sensors, for example, now come as standard as does speed alert (single ding at 80kmph, continuous beeping at 120kmph and above) and seatbelt reminders for both front occupants.

2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift First Drive ZigWheels

Those LED projector headlights aren't just nicer to look at but also get automatic activation and auto levelling. Even the instrument cluster gets a “Halo" that changes colour based on the drive mode (White = SHVS active. Green = Eco drive mode. Blue = Other driving conditions).

Verdict

2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift First Drive ZigWheels

The 2018 Ciaz facelift is an intelligent one. It wraps the Ciaz’ simple but proven package in a more emotive deal. What was once deemed a safe and predictable choice is now a car with some personality and one that makes a statement.

2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz Facelift First Drive ZigWheels

Yes, they could've offered a variant with six airbags, a more pleasing petrol engine, an automatic transmission that's more 2018 and maybe even a sunroof. But at its price, the Ciaz does undercut the competition while still giving you new reasons to consider buying one.

I own a ciaz 1.3 diesel vdi, I have driven it almost 110000 kilometres and honestly its a great car with absolutely amazing mileage.I like to drive with a heavy foot but still the car gives a mileage of around 20-22 kilometres per litre. Its pretty spacious and has a very big boot capacity.I also own a toyota fortuner but my parents prefer to be driven around in ciaz only.Honestly, It only lacks good build quality but i must agree that its a value for money car.Its stability at high speed is quite surprising and breaking is also decent.

I have been using the Suzuki Ciaz Alpha petrol variant (bs4) for the past three years, And I have completed a total of over 25000 km. The journey was always royal except for some minor incidents which blew away the fun of riding this car. Let me split my review into three parts: the good, The bad and the ugly Good:- 1. The car looks royal and has a pretty good road presence. The dimensions are pretty large, Which provides luxurious leg space and comfort. The second-row seats three people easily without any discomfort. The advantage is that Ciaz doesn't have a bump in the middle of the rear seat, Which makes sitting comfortably. 2. The overall look is pretty, Both front and rear lights are classy. Though the rear light feels like a copycat of BMW, The rear led lights to light up decently. The front light is white led, Which provides better illumination than any other car in the segment. The auto lighting feature, Provided as a feature identifies the range and height of the illumination to be provided on the road. The disadvantage of this is noted in 'the bad'. 3. The ride is joyful, calm, and luxurious. On highways, It feels like floating and moves smoothly, Which feels good. 4. The rear camera clarity is very good, Which gives similar to the 180-degree viewport. 5. The interior of the car looks premium. The premium glossy finish, The wood-like panel in the dashboard, Tan leather seats looks and feels premium. The seats are luxurious, soft and comfortable. Bad:- 1. The auto illuminating light has the disadvantage of auto-adjusting the length and height setting of the illumination. Even when flashing the light or in a high beam, the height of the light is very low. So, If the vehicle from the opposite direction throws light at your eyes, You cannot warn them as your high beam is similar to their low beam. 2. Sound insulation is very bad. You can hear everything outside. Even people talking outside can be heard clearly from inside even if all the windows are closed. The same is the case with the inside voice going out. 3. The Ciaz boasts a premium 4 speaker music system. Which is an average music system. There is an issue with clarity on high and low pitched music. 4. There is an issue with the gear system. Occasionally, The gear doesn't go to the reverse mode. You will have to move the car forward a bit, then stop and put the car in reverse. I initially thought the issue was specific to my car alone, But talking to other Ciaz owners proved that, It was a common issue. 5. You will be offered 20+kmpl mileage by the salesman when buying the car. Never fall for that. I have never got a mileage above 17 km even in eco mode.6.As the dashboard is painted glossy black and the slanting of the windshield is more, When you are driving towards the sunlight, You are blinded as the dashboard is mirrored on the windshield, And you will not be able to see anything. Ugly:- 1. If you leave the car in bright sunlight for a couple of hours, When you get in the car, You will feel a salty, Nauseating smell coming from the air vents. This will go only after turning on the air conditioner for a couple of minutes. 2. Though the car boasts a 1500cc engine, As the weight of the car is more. The power delivery is less. Even on highways, Cars of the lower segment will overtake you very easily leaving you far behind. But, Considering the peaceful and calm ride, That can be ignored. Verdict:- As an overall package. The Ciaz Alpha is a 'not-so-premium' comfortable car to travel long distances, and you will definitely love it.

    Driving experience

Driving experience: i have been driving for past 4 years.Everyday on an average >50 km.The driving is pleasant. The vehicle performs optimally in bad road and bumper to bumper traffic. The steering is a bit heavier as compared to tata cars/ hyundai’s.However, In high speed (>80km) the steering response beautifully.Comfort: the cabin is spacious and ambiance is eye pleasing. The second row seats are having good leg room.Downsides: driver seat adjustment is bad.The head space is narrow. The second row passengers do not have adjustable head rest. The glove box is not cooled. The inside cabin noise is moderate.Worse than hyundai and tata.Better than kia seltos.I do not feel any vibration inside cabin. My car runs in petrol.Handling: the car behaves like gentleman in heavy traffic. The pickup is moderate. Not too bad.Maneuvering through road is hassle free.Night driving: the headlights lacks intensity. The fog lights are un-remarkable.I wonder why a reputable company like maruti-suzuki can’t provide better lightings. The most scary is night driving in rain.Almost nothing visible on a tar road.Service: i did service once a year and the average cost is ~12000-14000.The service center personnel are helpful. The battery lasted exactly 3 years.Mileage: in highway >18 km/lin city: ~ 15 km/lmixed conditions: 17 km/l.

    Quality levels

Ciaz is not for car enthusiasts. It's a very comfortable car with a lot of legroom and 3 adults can sit comfortably in the rear seat as there isn't a big h**p in the middle. The cabin is very spacious and the beige treatment in the interior gives a good airy feel. The engine is very refined and has good amount of initial torque. But at the final range there isn't enough power output. The engine loves to rev a lot.I personally feel that msil could have given it a 6th gear. The clutch is super-duper light and shifting is so easy.It is an easy car to drive in the city as well as on highways. The steering is very light that it doesn't give any feel or feedback. The suspension is on the softer side and absorbs most of the bumps and potholes very well. There are few issues with the car, That is, There are panel gaps everywhere.Actually the panel gaps are big and the fit and finish isn't great. The quality levels could have been improved both in the interior as well as exterior.Overall the car suits your parents very well but it doesn't inspire the youngsters because ciaz is much of a comfort oriented car and not a sporty one.

    Poor quality

As this is comfort oriented Sedan, all of its components incl. engine is tuned in such a way. Therefore don't expect any sort of performance. If you floor the throttle the sound of the engine becomes so loud that some wouldn't be liking it. But personally I like its sound when I floor it. Suspension in tuned in such a way that it offers maximum comfort at the cost of handling. Some defects in the vehicle that I found was poor quality of plastics used and the sound from the speakers are below average that you couldn't increase the volume because the rattling all around the cabin is obnoxious

Must Read Questions & Answers Before Buying Ciaz

  • Most Relevant
Q. Which car is the best Ciaz or Slavia?
  • Selecting the right car would depend on several factors such as your budget preference on the segment, features required, cabin space, engine options, brand preference, etc. The Ciaz continues to get the basics of space, ride quality, and ease of driving spot on. This alone, in our books, is enough reason to seriously consider buying one. Then there's the fact that the new engine brings with it a bucketload of efficiency and also solves the automatic’s drinking habit to a fair extent. On the other hand, The Skoda Slavia offers a sweet balance between the alternatives currently available in the segment, blending modern tech with great space, practicality, and driveability. Moreover, we would suggest you to take a test drive before making the final decision. Follow the link and select your desired city for dealership details.
Q. Which is better between Ciaz Sigma or S-cross Sigma?
  • The Maruti Ciaz 1.4 Sigma has been discontinued. On the other hand, the S-Cross is a very capable city car. With a petrol engine, it will become even better in its city duties. However, the price will be a big deciding factor. For a better understanding of compatibility and driving comfort, we would suggest you to take a test drive. Follow the link and select your city accordingly for dealership details.
Q. How much space required to park?
  • In configurations, Maruti Ciaz has dimensions of 4490 mm in length, 1730 mm in width and 1485 mm in height. You may park the vehicle in accordance with the aforementioned dimensions.
More Questions |Ciaz Community
Q. Warranty details?
  • Maruti Suzuki Ciaz comes with 2 years of brand warranty or40,000 kilometers (whichever occurs first) from the date of invoice to the first owner.
Q. What is better, to buy Ciaz or Dzire?
  • Selecting the right car would depend on several factors such as your budget preference on the segment, features required, cabin space, engine options, brand preference, etc. If you need a comfortable sedan that ticks a lot of boxes for a daily driver which can also do long distances in comfort then look no further. Maruti Ciaz is currently available in a Petrol engine. The 1462 cc Petrol engine generates a power of 103.25bhp@6000rpm and torque of 138Nm@4400rpm. On the other hand, The Dzire looks premium inside-out and has enough equipment to match its appeal. Maruti Dzire is currently available in a Petrol engine. The 1197 cc Petrol engine generates a power of 88.50bhp@6000rpm and torque of 113Nm@4400rpm. Moreover, we would suggest you to take a test drive before making the final decision. Follow the link and select your desired city for dealership.
Q. Can we use facelift bumpers to convert old ciaz to new ciaz?
  • It would not be a feasible option to get such a modification done as the structure of both the cars is different.
  • Not possible
