The Tata Curvv and Curvv EV are set to disrupt their respective rivals with a bunch of segment-first features and a distinctive identity

With the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara/Toyota Hyryder, Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun, the compact SUV space is a segment with no shortage of rivalry. It is fierce with facelifts and updates flowing in from time to time, in a bid to offer something that the rivals don’t. But once in a blue moon comes a car that pushes segment boundaries altogether with multiple firsts for the segment.

Seems like that blue moon will arrive soon with the upcoming Tata Curvv that promises to bring new things to the compact SUV segment. How? Read on to find out:

New bodystyle

The compact SUV segment is not experimental with body styles. There might be degrees to their styling, from sharp to rounded and subtle, but no one plays around with the overall silhouette, which is of a typical SUV. The Tata Curvv is set to change that with its SUV-coupe bodystyle. It is sure to stand out with its sloping coupe roofline, which is something we only see in luxury SUVs. That bodystyle merged with the sleek lighting elements will mark the Curvv’s design as an immediate idiosyncrasy in the segment.

Big screen

Touchscreen systems taking up most of the real estate inside the cabin is something we all are getting familiar with. The biggest in the compact SUV space is a 10.25-inch unit, but not for long. The Tata Curvv is expected to borrow the Harrier’s 12.3-inch infotainment system, which will make it the biggest screen size in the segment.

Going by the spy shots and the format seen in the Harrier and Nexon EV’s unit, it’ll sit on a slim bezel and offer crisp graphics, hopefully without the occasional glitches. Unlike the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta 10.25-inch units, this will offer wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as well.

Premium styling cues

Animated LED headlights and flush door handles are styling cues that are seen mostly in segments above. The Tata Curvv is going to get both of these features, upping its styling appeal and wow factor. If the coupe-like styling wasn’t attractive enough, it’ll get flush door handles that will make its design look uninterrupted. Currently, only the Mahindra XUV700 midsize SUV gets flush door handles.

The animated LED lights with the welcome and goodbye function have already been seen on the new Harrier and Safari, and are something we truly appreciate. The Curvv is set to boast both these design cues over its peers when it launches.

Multiple powertrain options

Yes, we’re aware that the likes of the Seltos and Creta offer NA petrol, turbo-petrol and diesel engine options. Then there is the Hyryder/Grand Vitara that offer mild- and strong-hybrid options. But none of the cars in this segment offer both fully electric and ICE-powered versions.

The Curvv and Curvv EV will offer a unique proposition in the segment. So people wanting to burn fuel will have the option to do exactly that, while people wanting to go electric can do so with the Curvv EV.

It is possible that a few of the rivals might get an electric alternative down the line, but the Curvv nameplate will be the first to offer both these options.

It is expected that the Curvv will first arrive in its electric guise, followed sometime later by the ICE-powered versions. The latter is expected to get both petrol and diesel engine options and you can know more about its ICE powertrains here. We expect the ICE-powered Curvv to be priced from around Rs 10.50 lakh, while the Curvv EV could retail from Rs 20 lakh onwards (all prices ex-showroom).

While the Curvv will rival the aforementioned compact SUVs, the Curvv EV will rival the MG ZS EV, Hyundai Kona Electric, and the recently spotted Hyundai Creta EV and the upcoming Maruti Suzuki eVX.
