The new Bonneville takes on one of India’s most popular modern Classic

Triumph Bonneville T40 vs Royal Enfield Classic 350: Detailed Comparison

Triumph has launched the Bonneville T40 in India, and the smallest Bonneville looks like it could be an interesting alternative to the Royal Enfield Classic 350. Both motorcycles follow the classic-roadster recipe, use engines of almost identical capacity and weigh almost exactly the same. But the Triumph brings considerably more performance and technology to the table. So, how do these two 350cc retro roadsters stack up?

Price: The Triumph Will Cost More

The Royal Enfield Classic 350 currently starts at around Rs 1.87 lakh in India, with the range going up to around Rs 2.23 lakh depending on the variant. Both prices are ex-showroom, Chennai.

The Triumph Bonneville T40, meanwhile, is priced from Rs 2,54,999 for the base T4, and goes up to Rs 2,79,999 for the top-end T40 and T40 Black (both prices are ex-showroom, Delhi).

That puts the T40 considerably above the Classic 350. However, Triumph is also positioning it as a more premium motorcycle, with a significantly more powerful engine and a much more extensive electronics package.

Triumph Bonneville T40 vs Royal Enfield Classic 350 Design

Design: British Bonneville vs Modern Classic

The Classic 350 is unmistakably Royal Enfield, with its rounded headlight, teardrop-shaped fuel tank, chrome detailing and a familiar silhouette. It has remained remarkably faithful to the classic formula while quietly adding modern touches such as LED lighting.

The Bonneville T40 takes a different route. It looks like a scaled-down version of Triumph’s larger Bonneville T100, with a round LED headlight, teardrop-shaped fuel tank, longer mudguards, peashooter exhaust and a sculpted engine profile.

There is plenty of attention to detail, too. The T40 gets classic rubber knee pads, the three-bar Triumph tank badge, brushed aluminium engine covers and hand-painted coach lining on the two-tone colour schemes. Triumph has also kept cables and hoses neatly tucked away to maintain the clean, uncluttered look.

So, while the Classic 350 is very much a Royal Enfield bike, the T40 has the visual DNA of a proper Bonneville, just in a smaller package.

Triumph Bonneville T40 vs Royal Enfield Classic 350 Design Engine

Engine: Same Capacity, Different Characters

Both motorcycles use 349cc-class single-cylinder engines, but the Triumph gets a liquid-cooled TR Series unit which makes 29 PS at 7,000rpm and 31.2 Nm at 5,500rpm, compared to the Classic 350’s 20.2 PS and 27 Nm. The Royal Enfield uses its J-platform 349cc air-cooled engine, paired with a five-speed gearbox.

The Classic 350 is tuned more towards relaxed, easy-going performance, while the Triumph should feel considerably more eager when the road opens up.

On paper, then, the Triumph has a sizeable advantage in both power and torque. It should also feel considerably more effortless at highway speeds.

Triumph Bonneville T40 vs Royal Enfield Classic 350 Underpinnings

Underpinnings: Different Flavours Of Classic

The Bonneville T40 gets a telescopic fork and twin shock absorbers, both with 130 mm of wheel travel. It rides on an 18-inch front and 17-inch rear spoked-wheel setup, with 100/90-18 and 150/70-17 tyres respectively.

The Classic 350 has a telescopic fork with 130 mm of wheel travel and twin rear shocks with 90 mm of wheel travel. It rides on a larger 19-inch front wheel and an 18-inch rear wheel.

The T40's standard seat height is 790 mm, although Triumph offers an accessory low seat that brings it down to 770 mm.

The Royal Enfield bike has a slightly higher seat height of 805 mm.

Even though the Bonneville has a larger 14.5-litre fuel tank capacity than the Classic's 13 litres, both bikes weigh the same at 195 kg kerb.

Braking duties are handled by a twin-piston front calliper and rear disc, with the T40 also getting braided brake lines and lean-sensitive cornering ABS.

Triumph Bonneville T40 vs Royal Enfield Classic 350 Features

Features: The T40 Is In A Different League

The Classic 350 does get a healthy dose of modern equipment. It gets LED lighting, a USB Type-C charging port, gear-position indicator and an optional Tripper navigation pod, depending on the variant.

But the Bonneville T40 takes things considerably further.

The headline feature is its 4-inch circular full-colour TFT display, which retains the classic appearance of the Bonneville while packing in a huge amount of functionality. There is even a Heritage Mode that switches the display to an analogue-style layout for riders who prefer a more traditional look.

The TFT gets full smartphone connectivity, including phone and music controls, while full map navigation comes as standard through Triumph's Navigation App. Riders can plan routes, add waypoints, save and import GPX routes and access points of interest directly through the display.

Then there are five riding modes: Road, Rain and Eco, along with two customisable modes. These modes adjust throttle response, traction control and ABS according to the selected setting.

The T40 also gets cruise control, lean-sensitive Optimised Cornering ABS and Optimised Cornering Traction Control.

Throw in full LED lighting with a distinctive DRL signature, self-cancelling indicators, Emergency Deceleration Warning, backlit switchgear and a USB Type-C charging socket, and the T40 becomes one of the most technologically loaded motorcycles in this retro-roadster space.

Classic Formula, Two Very Different Takes

The Triumph Bonneville T40 and Royal Enfield Classic 350 may look like direct rivals on paper, but they approach the segment from different directions.

The Classic 350 sticks closely to the formula that has made it such a popular modern classic: unmistakable styling, relaxed performance, accessible ergonomics and a relatively approachable price.

The 350 Bonneville takes the same broad concept and turns almost everything up a notch. It has more power, more torque, a dedicated chassis, a larger fuel tank and a much more sophisticated electronics package. It also puts considerably more emphasis on the finer details, from hand-painted coach lining and brushed aluminium finishes to its carefully hidden wiring and hoses.

But that extra performance and technology come at a price, as the baby Bonnie sits well above the Classic 350.

Ultimately, the choice will come down to what you want from a 350cc retro roadster. Get the Classic 350 if you want a proper old-school retro bike without spending a lot. Get the Triumph if you want considerably more performance, more sophisticated rider aids and a whole lot more technology, without giving up the classic Bonneville charm.
