The newly launched Yamaha R2 sits between the familiar R15 and larger-capacity supersport motorcycles, aiming to offer a more mature riding experience without losing the sporty character Yamaha’s R-series is known for. It gets a premium design, a lively engine and a strong electronics package, but there are a few areas where the R2 could have done better.

The biggest highlight of the R2 is its engine character. While the motor feels relatively flat at lower revs, it comes alive as the revs climb, delivering strong and exciting top-end performance. This makes the bike enjoyable when ridden enthusiastically and gives it a more engaging character than what you get from a typical 200 cc motorcycle.

However, the engine’s weak spot is below 6,000 rpm. Quick overtakes could require a downshift, especially if you are riding in a higher gear. This means the R2 demands a little more involvement from the rider during day-to-day riding.

The R2 also scores well when it comes to overall ergonomics. Compared to the R15 V4, its riding position is more comfortable and less demanding, making it better suited to longer rides and everyday use. This is an important advantage because the R2 still retains the visual appeal and sporty riding experience of a fully faired motorcycle, while being easier to live with on a daily basis.

Yamaha has given the R2 a premium look and feel, with impressive build quality adding to its appeal. The motorcycle also gets a good electronics package, which makes it feel more modern and upmarket.

However, it misses out on some headline features that could have made the package even more compelling. There is no TPMS (tyre pressure monitoring system), cornering ABS or even lean-sensitive traction control. While these features aren’t essential for everyone, the absence is noticeable on a motorcycle positioned at a premium price point.

At 149 kg kerb, the Yamaha R2 is light and easy to handle, which makes it quite approachable even for riders stepping up from smaller motorcycles. It also offers very capable cornering dynamics and feels stable when ridden through flowing corners.

That said, the R15 remains the sharper tool when the road gets tight and twisty. Its slightly smaller size and more agile nature make it feel quicker to change direction, giving the R15 an advantage for riders who prioritise outright agility.

The biggest challenge for the R2 could be its price. With a premium of more than Rs 50,000 over the R15, buyers will have to decide whether the R2’s stronger performance, more comfortable ergonomics, premium feel and additional equipment justify the extra money.
The Yamaha R2 gets several things right. Its exciting top-end, comfortable ergonomics, premium design and confidence-inspiring handling make it a more mature motorcycle than the R15 V4. However, the weak low-end performance, slightly less agile handling and lack of some advanced electronics prevent it from being an outright upgrade in every respect. For some buyers, the Rs 50,000-plus premium could ultimately be the deciding factor. But other than this, the Yamaha R2 is still one of the nicest looking, quickest and hardware rich motorcycles in the segment.
