Should Honda bring this to India instead of the CB500F?

In April 2021, Honda showcased the CB400F at the Shanghai Auto Show. Now, the bike has been launched in China, and it looks stunning.

The Honda CB400F has undergone some fine aesthetic updates for 2021. It features a new LED headlamp with sleek LED position lights. Complementing the headlamp are muscular tank extensions, which serve as wind ducts.

Overall, the design is quite similar to the CB500F. So much so that if you swapped the headlight, it would become challenging to differentiate between the CB400F and the CB500F.

Which brings us to why a 400cc bike, when Honda already has a successful 500cc lineup? Well, this is because the 400F is primarily aimed at the Japanese youth. And in Japan, with a medium-sized two-wheeler driver’s licence, you can only drive vehicles with a displacement of less than 400cc.

The CB400F uses a 399cc parallel-twin motor that puts out 46PS and 37Nm, and is mated to a 6-speed gearbox. For reference, this is 2.5PS more than India’s most famous sub-400cc naked bike, the KTM 390 Duke

Honda has given the CB400F a flat handlebar, which coupled with a seat height of just 790mm, results in an aggressive yet comfortable riding posture.

When aboard the bike, you are greeted by a negative LCD instrument cluster (similar to the CB500X) that shows all necessary information.

The bike is sprung on a telescopic fork and an adjustable monoshock. Anchoring it are single disc brakes with Nissin calipers. Dual-channel ABS also comes standard on the CB400F.

The 2021 Honda CB400F retails at 37,000 Yuan in China, which is approximately Rs 4.25 lakh. This is a pretty steep asking price by Indian standards, considering the 390 Duke offers a lot more for a lot less money. That’s precisely why Honda may probably never bring the CB400F here. Surely, the CB500F makes more sense here.
