If you think it’s just an overhauled KTM 790 Duke, think again.

KTM launched the 790 Duke in India back in 2019 and decided to get about 100 units for the country. But after the introduction of the BS6 norms, it faced the axe in the Indian market. KTM has now introduced its successor, the 890 Duke. Here are five things you should know about the bike:

No Replacement For Displacement

Engine

While there has been no significant change in its looks, a lot has changed when it comes to the powerhouse of the 890 Duke. It uses an 899cc a Euro5/BS6-compliant liquid-cooled 889cc motor that belts out 115PS of power and 92Nm of torque. That’s 11PS and 8Nm more than the 790 Duke. For reference, the 890 Duke’s rival, Triumph Street Triple R, makes 123PS of power and 79Nm of torque. To know more about the Street Triple R, check out our review.

Expected Price, Launch Timeline

Launch

KTM has priced the 890 Duke at GBP 9,649 (approximately Rs 9.63 lakh), though, we can expect it to retail at around Rs 9 lakh as it will be brought via the CKD route. It could be launched by late-2021 or early-2022.

KTM hasn’t compromised on the electronic suite of the 890 Duke. It gets four riding modes: Rain, Road, Sport and Track -- all of which come with different traction control settings, wheelie control, cornering ABS, throttle response, and launch control. However, KTM is offering the bi-directional quickshifter as an option, as opposed to a standard fitment like on the 890 Duke R.

KTM has ensured the underpinnings also receive a proper overhaul. The braking system has been updated with new brake pads for a better bite. The 43mm apex fork is also claimed to offer better feedback. The 890 Duke uses Continental ContiRoad Tyres, unlike the 790 Duke’s Maxxis Supermaxx ST rubber.

Deceptive Looks

appearance

The 890 Duke looks a lot like the 790 Duke. It gets the same all-LED headlight with DRLs, edgy bodywork, neutral riding position, and a tapered underseat exhaust. The only distinguishing factor is its paint scheme and stickers. KTM has used the black and orange paint for the tank, unlike the silver and orange seen on the 790 Duke.
