Unmistakably Yamaha

The Yamaha YZF-R2 gets an unmistakable Yamaha supersport silhouette, with its design inspired by its sibling, the R15 V4. The sharp, aerodynamic fairing, compact proportions and aggressive riding stance give it the visual drama you'd expect from an R-series motorcycle.

The front gets a projector LED headlight flanked by LED DRLs, while the rear features a block-style LED taillight inspired by the YZF-R1.

Yamaha R2 Engine

R2’s Heart

Powering the Yamaha YZF-R2 is an all-new 204cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC, four-valve, single-cylinder engine producing 26.5 PS and 19.1 Nm. The engine comes paired with a 6-speed gearbox and gets an Assist & Slipper Clutch. For reference, its biggest rival, the KTM RC 200 makes 25 PS and 19.2 Nm.

The R2 also gets ride-by-wire technology and Yamaha Ride Control (YRC), offering three riding modes: Street, Sport and Rain.

New Underpinnings

Unlike the Deltabox setup seen on the R15, the R2 uses an all-new steel tube diamond frame. The frame weighs just 14kg and uses a four-point engine mounting system.

Suspension duties are handled by an inverted telescopic fork and a monoshock. The motorcycle rides on 17-inch wheels and gets disc brakes at both ends, with dual-channel ABS and gets traction control as standard.

The R2 weighs just 149kg kerb, making it the lightest motorcycle in its segment.

Feature List That Has You Covered

The R2 gets a 5-inch TFT display with smartphone connectivity and navigation functionality. It also gets Yamaha Ride Control with three riding modes, while the Smart Key System is available on the R2 M.

One of the biggest talking points is the bidirectional quickshifter, available on the second and R2 M variants. This allows clutchless upshifts as well as downshifts, adding to the motorcycle's sporty character.

The R2 also gets traction control, dual-channel ABS, and an assist & slip clutch.

ZigSays

Yamaha fans now finally have something to look forward to and upgrade to if they own an FZ or an R15. Sure, we did get the R3 for a brief amount of time, but it was considerably more expensive. The R2 bridges that gap rather nicely.

With its sporty design, new 204cc engine, lightweight 149kg kerb weight, the R2 brings a proper supersport experience without venturing too far into premium-bike territory.

It goes up against the KTM RC 200, Bajaj Pulsar RS 200 and Hero Karizma XMR, making this one of the most interesting additions to the entry-level performance motorcycle space.
