Editor's View of MG Hector

  • Upside

Great introductory price, a spacious cabin area, safety features, easy to drive engines

  • Downside

Unexciting dynamics, cabin quality that is not up to the mark as compared to rivals

  • Our Verdict

Aside from the flashy exterior and the gimmicky promise of “Internet Inside,” the Hector is a sensible, middle-ground approach to a family SUV. It needs to step things up a notch or two to really bring in a sense of quality to rival the competition from Kia or Hyundai.

I booked MG Hector on 19th of July, 2019. I opted for the Smart DCT option (Aurora Silver) at MG’s Showroom Ahmedabad which is owned by Concept motors. I had driven MG before booking the car itself. But after booking it I still wanted a test drive. So 2 weeks after booking the car i went down for a test drive. I was with the same sales person who sold me the car. I was just cruising around on the service road when there was a thud noise in the Engine and then the car stopped. I looked on to the information cluster ahead and it showed orange coloured exclamation mark to which the sales person told that there is some issue with the transmission of the car. He called some guy from the technical dept where he told me that transmission had failed and it was the second time something like this happened. The car had only 4200km on the test runs. I cancelled the booking the next day to which their manager told me to wait and let’s see if there was any issue or not. But as I was adamant they proceeded with the refund. Though they told me that the refund will be processed within 15 days, it took them 28 days just to process it and give me the cheque that too after alot of follow ups. The car is good on cosmetics but I don’t think so that you can trust the engine in long run. MG still needs to take care and refine the engine according to indian road conditions. Giving variety of features won’t help if there is an issue in the Engine Quality.

Excellent built quality ; design of interior is good , very neatly laid out , fit and finish is extremely good . Extremely spacious and insulated cabin . Safety is also given a first priority . Ride quality is good , not very overwhelming ... There is a minor body roll ( afterall its a SUV) but is very planted , very Plush and very comfortable ... Absorbs bumps beautifully . DCT is a little slow on downshifts and is focused more on comfort than a enthusiastic drive (engine doesnt like being rushed ) , but is powerful and has a linear power delivery. Service plans are excellent and tension free . Overall a very reliable and value for money SUV.

brilliant car by Mg . If we compare the cars in hectors price range Jeep compass is over prized no premium features no comfort. Tata Harrier is fair and interior is worst . The segment king Hyundai Creta is just like I20 wearing heels it is not a car Worth buying. I waited for mg was confused in hector and Creta but hector was just better than creta in terms of design, features, interior . So those people planning to buy hector buy the smart model because it worth buying and I have also bought the smart one.

Mileage of vehicle is very low in city, I have getting average mileage of 5-6 in Bangalore city, two jointed test drive happened with MG hector but no solution been provided rather saying this is standard mileage for city so don't believe any other review and survey if they says city mileage is more than 7

Awesome car , masculine , people look at that when you drive. Pickup is little less. It is only one week old and ran about 800 kms. So not much of feedback.

MG Hector Highlights

Hector Specifications

The MG Hector can be had with a 1.5-litre turbo petrol or a 2.0-litre diesel motor. The 1.5-litre petrol motor churns out 143PS of power and 250Nm of torque. It is also offered with a 48V mild-hybrid system which improves the fuel efficiency and provides torque boost. The 2.0-litre diesel motor, on the other hand, is the same Multijet diesel found in the Jeep Compass and puts out 170PS and 350Nm. While the petrol, mild-hybrid petrol and diesel come mated to a 6-speed manual, the 7-speed DCT can be had with the petrol only.

Hector Variants

The Hector is available in a total of four variants -- Style, Super, Smart and Sharp. The MG Hector's 1.5-litre petrol engine is available in the Style, Super, Smart (DCT) and Sharp (DCT) variant. On the other hand, its mild-hybrid counterpart is available in the Super, Smart (MT) and Sharp (MT) variant. Its 2.0-litre diesel engine is available in the Style, Super, Smart (MT) and Sharp (MT) variant.

Hector Exterior and Interior

It has the right mix of aggression and ornamentation for a modern-day SUV. Those LED DRLs sparkle brightly as they are squeezed against the hood. The generous but tasteful use of chrome as it cradles the large grille and arcs around the fog lamps adds to the glitter effect. Then there are the all-LED headlamps and tail lamps which are available in all variants except for the base! The ORVM-mounted turn indicators, skid plates and roof rails ensure that even the base variant doesn’t look barebones either! It dwarfs other MG SUVs and its competition here in India too. Incredibly, it is longer than the Tata Harrier by a solid 57mm. That is an incredible stat, considering that the Harrier is larger than the Honda CR-V. From the rear, the Hector has some striking similarities to a German brand’s SUV design. The clamshell bonnet and tail lamps that fan out have a Q-factor to them. Get it? Despite the slight gangliness or its derived design, the Hector comes across as a head-turning SUV.

The MG Hector comes loaded with features to take on its well-established rivals. Some highlights here include a 10.4-inch Infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, i-SMART connected-car tech Panoramic sunroof, Electric tailgate 360-degree camera and front parking sensors.Safety features on the Hector include six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability program, traction control and hill hold assist.

MG Hector Competitors

Tata Harrier: We don’t see any major deal breakers with the Harrier. It’s loaded, spacious, drives well and is built like a tank. Tata’s best yet? Without a doubt.

Mahindra XUV500: Like most Mahindra vehicles, the XUV offers a lot for the money. Quality is a bit of a hit or a miss, and there are known niggles too. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that Mahindra’s big boy is a well-packaged SUV for those who love munching miles.

Hyundai Creta : The Hyundai Creta might be a vanilla package, but that doesn’t stop it from being a potent one. It’s got the mix of looks, features and drivability which ensures thousands throng the showrooms. The waiting periods can get annoying though, so be warned!

Jeep Compass: If that Jeep badge tugs at your heart, the Compass is currently the most affordable way to scratch that itch. In return, you get a solidly built, fun to drive brute that can tear through the scenery if needed. Not a bad deal, we say!

Kia Seltos: The Kia Seltos looks stunning, is really well built and is packed to the gills with features. There's an exhaustive list of variants, two trim packages, three engines and automatic options in both diesel and petrol power. It handles and drives like a car and the only real downsides are it rides a little on the stiff side and doesn't really give off those big SUV feels some people crave.
