Shrinkflation Is Real: A 250cc Royal Enfield Might Just Become A Reality

A small-capacity hybrid engine from Royal Enfield with priority on mileage? Times are surely a changin’

Quick News Highlights:

  • Royal Enfield working on new 250cc platform, possibly with a mileage of around 50kmpl in hybrid mode

  • Will likely use a CFMoto-co-developed hybrid engine

  • It could be priced around Rs 1.30 lakh, undercutting the Hunter 350

Royal Enfield is reportedly cooking something rather un-Royal Enfield — a new entry-level 250cc motorcycle that may not just be the brand's most affordable offering yet, but also its first hybrid. The Chennai-based bikemaker is reportedly teaming up with CFMoto to source a compact, hybrid-compatible engine for its new platform, internally codenamed ‘V’.

Made Like A (Hand) Gun

While Royal Enfield’s sweet spot has long been the 350cc retro category, this 250cc bike is aimed at first-time premium buyers, especially those who are graduating from the Splendors and Shines from the commuter bike world. With a potential ex-showroom price tag of around Rs 1.30 lakh, it will also target 150-160cc sporty commuter bike buyers, as they fall in the same price bracket. It is likely to be Royal Enfield’s most budget-friendly model, sitting well below the current Hunter 350.

From Chennai To China

The engine, reportedly to be co-developed with CFMoto, will likely include mild-hybrid tech — think smart fuel-saving tweaks like the recently launched 2025 Yamaha FZ-S Fi Hybrid or the TVS Raider 125 iGo, not full-electric magic. This setup could push mileage up to 50kmpl - an unheard-of figure for anything wearing a Royal Enfield badge. It’ll also help the company meet upcoming CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) norms and BS6 Phase 2+ regulations.

Built For India, In India

The new platform will reportedly be heavily localised, with up to 90% of the parts made in India. While the powertrain is co-developed by CFMoto, everything else: chassis, suspension, brakes, design, etc. — will be all Royal Enfield. Production will happen at the company’s Chennai plant, keeping prices in check for both domestic and export markets.

Not A Marriage, Just A Fling?

Despite this partnership with CFMoto, reports say there are no joint venture plans on the horizon: Bajaj-KTM this is not. Royal Enfield’s partnership with CF Moto seems strictly about fast-tracking development and staying compliant — nothing more.

What’s Next?

Don’t expect to see this 250cc hybrid Royal Enfield in showrooms this year. A formal announcement is likely only by late 2025, with a potential launch likely somewhere around late 2026. But when it does land, it could carve out a new niche in the 200-250cc segment — much like how the Classic 350 did after its launch in 2009.

ZigSays

A 250cc retro roadster with hybrid tech and killer mileage? That’s not just a new bike — that’s a whole new direction for Royal Enfield. If priced right, it could become the next big thing for young, urban riders who want style without splurging. Royal Enfield has come a long way from solely catering to the 350cc segment to coming up with twin-cylinder and even liquid-cooled engines of late. It goes to show that the brand is flexible enough to keep up with the ever-changing tides.
