BMW F 450 GS First Service Cost Revealed: Maintenance Bill Analysed

The BMW F 450 GS is a premium bike -- no two ways about it. Even though it's the most affordable BMW GS bike in India, its top-end Trophy variant costs about Rs 6.2 lakh on-road in Mumbai. To put that in perspective, it's almost as much as one of the higher variants of the Maruti Suzuki Alto. While it's not an apples to apples comparison, it gives you an idea of the baby GS' positioning. 

To that end, one can expect its upkeep costs to be hand in hand with its pricing. For someone who can afford to spend north of Rs 6 lakh on a bike wouldn't mind spending the associated service costs. However, one customer had quite a shock when he received a first service cost estimate, which he posted online:

The total of the costs in the image comes to about Rs 12,000, which is more than annual service costs of some cars like the Alto mentioned above. 

Labour Charges Make Up A Big Chunk

The breakdown tells an interesting story. Labour charges alone add up to a hefty Rs 7,058, split between general job time, polishing, the BMW running-in check, oil change labour, and a line item simply called "mechanical care" priced at Rs 2,700. Parts and consumables: An oil filter, gasket ring, BMW's Motorrad Advantec Ultimate engine oil, and chain spray take the bill further north, with the oil alone costing Rs 2,760.

However, we ran this bill past a few of our own dealer contacts, and the consensus was blunt: the labour costs here are inflated and could reasonably be brought down. However, price of parts or oil remain fixed regardless of dealership. That said, even with the reduced costs, we don't expect the first service to be as cheap as something like the KTM 390 Adventure or the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450.

Premium products will often have premium costs associated with them. While one might be able to spread the initial purchase burden over a few years with a long-term loan, the ownership costs still remain. Our sources state that the first service should be in the ballpark of Rs 6,500 -- which in itself isn't a small amount, but then again, it's a BMW after all. Now, if you are an owner or are planning to get the baby GS, and are worried about the said costs, here's what we can recommend:

You can start annual fund, however you like, wherein you accumulate a substantial amount to cover all the maintainence costs. It can also help you in case of any unforeseen expenses. A marginal amount every month can compound to a substantial sum at the end of the year. This might just ease you of the seemingly high periodic expense, and factor in the tyre costs as well.
