Ather’s Electric Motorcycle Delayed Beyond 2028

Ather Energy has officially delayed its entry into the electric motorcycle segment by more than two years. CEO Tarun Mehta confirmed the move in a latest investor's presentation, stating the company will first concentrate on expanding its new EL scooter platform. This strategy signals a cautious, data-driven approach to the developing e-motorcycle market rather than a rush to compete.

Motorcycles Put on Hold

Ather's electric motorcycle, codenamed Zenith, is now more than two years from launch. According to CEO Tarun Mehta, electric motorcycles are not an immediate priority for the company. Instead of entering the segment now, Ather plans to observe how the market develops. The company wants to understand customer demand and identify which motorcycle segments gain traction before committing its resources. This deliberate pause allows Ather to learn from the experiences of other brands while it focuses capital on its core scooter business.

EL01 Debuts August 2026

The company's current focus is squarely on its new mass-market EL scooter platform. The first product, the Ather EL01, has a confirmed debut date of August 29, 2026. Production of the EL platform has already begun, with crucial steps like homologation complete and high-volume trials now underway. This platform forms the basis of Ather's near-term expansion. Following the EL01 launch, the company plans to introduce one or two more products based on the same EL architecture over the next year. This move reinforces its strategy to build volume in the electric scooter space with a new, more accessible product line.

What This Means for Buyers

For potential customers, this strategic shift means an Ather-badged electric motorcycle is not on the cards until 2028 at the earliest. The company is content to let competitors test the waters first. The market already includes players like Ultraviolette, Revolt, and Oben, with legacy brands such as Royal Enfield (developing the Flying Flea), Bajaj Auto, and Hero MotoCorp also working on their own electric motorcycles. Ather’s decision to wait signals its confidence in the scooter segment but also a prudent approach to a motorcycle market where customer preferences for electric power are still forming. Buyers wanting an Ather will be served by scooters for the foreseeable future, while the motorcycle project awaits clearer market signals.
