The Indian adventure motorcycle scene has been very busy lately. Now back to the segment is the Kawasaki Versys-X 300. It has been launched in India at Rs 3.80 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The bike is now available in Metallic Ocean Blue/Pearl Metallic White colour scheme with refreshed graphics.
How Deep Are Your Pockets?
Let's get straight to the point. Yes, the Kawasaki Versys-X 300 is quite expensive even though it has a price tag which is a lakh more affordable than before, thanks to localisation. At such an exorbitant price tag, the Japanese makes the KTM 390 Adventure (priced at Rs 3,67,699 ex-showroom, Delhi) sound like a sweet, sweet deal. Even the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, priced at Rs 2,85,000 (ex-showroom, Chennai), is over a lakh more affordable than the Kawasaki. But this Versys has an upper hand with its refined twin-cylinder engine, which we experienced in its previous iteration.

Smooth Operator
Powering the Versys-X 300 is the same OBD-2B compliant 296cc, parallel-twin, liquid-cooled engine which we have seen on the Ninja 300. The mill churns out 40PS and 25.7Nm, and is paired to a 6-speed gearbox with a slip-and-assist clutch. One of the highlights of the previous gen X 300 was its super light clutch lever action, and we expect it to be the same here.
The Versys-X is quite simple in terms of the hardware it gets. It gets a telescopic fork and a monoshock, a 19/17-inch spoke wheels setup, a 17-litre fuel tank, and petal disc brakes at both ends. At 815mm, the seat height is not as high as the KLX230’s (880mm). This makes it fairly accessible, despite having a generous ground clearance of 180mm. The kerb weight of 184kg will also allow riders to manoeuvre the Versys-X easily at slow speeds.

Sometimes Less Is More
While other manufacturers are equipping their adventure bikes with the latest and greatest tech you can imagine, Kawasaki has kept it quite simple. It continues with halogen lights all-round, and unlike the TFT consoles on its rivals, this Kawasaki comes with a semi-digital instrument console. And that's it. Rider aids are simple as well, with just dual-channel ABS, no more.

ZigSays
The Kawasaki Versys-X 300 is quite minimal in that sense. Neither is it the most powerful, nor is it the most tech-loaded, nor the cheapest of the sub-500cc ADVs. But it is the cheapest 300cc twin-cylinder ADV. However, it promises to provide a riding experience like no other. As to how the bike rides, we will save our verdict once we get to swing our leg over it. But if you are in the market for a twin-cylinder adventure bike with similar levels of performance, more tech and have a bit more money to splurge on, the Honda NX500 is a motorcycle you definitely cannot ignore, but that’s far more expensive.
