Harley-Davidson has been topping headlines of late, first with X 350 and now with the HD400. Now, even though both bikes are in the same 350cc-sub-500cc segment, the approach Harley has taken towards both is completely different. Here’s a lowdown on the differences between the two bikes:
Similar Yet Unique Designs
Unlike most modern Harley-Davidsons, the X 350 and the HD400 aren’t all-out cruisers, but are on the lines of neo-retro roadsters. For both bikes, Harley seems to have taken styling cues from the now discontinued XR1200X. So, you get a circular LED headlight, a muscular fuel tank and single-piece step-up seat, but the LED DRL, indicators, taillight and the exhausts are different on both bikes.
Two Different Engines
The X 350 is based on the QJ Motor SRK 350, which uses a 353cc, liquid-cooled, parallel twin motor that pumps out 36.7PS and 31Nm and comes with a six-speed gearbox. Now, while the details of the HD400’s engine aren’t out yet, the images show that this is an air-/oil-cooled unit, and it could be a 422cc unit. Furthermore, the console’s 8000rpm limit hints that this could be a torquey, long-stroke engine. We expect this to make around 30PS and oodles of low-end torque.
Different Underpinnings
Since the X 350 is essentially the SRK 350 with different clothes, it has the same underpinnings as the Chinese bike. So, USD fork and monoshock setup, twin petal discs up front and a single disc at the rear, with 17-inch alloy wheels at both ends have been unchanged. Meanwhile, the Hero MotoCorp-developed Harley has USD fork and gas-charged dual shocks to handle suspension duties while an axially mounted ByBre caliper at the front with a single disc up front and a disc at the rear take care of braking. This bike also uses a 18/17-inch alloy wheel setup with tubeless CEAT Zoom Cruz tyres.
Features
The Harley-Davidson X 350 and HD400 both feature LED illumination all-around. Both even get monopod instrument consoles, but while the Harley features an all-digital dash, the X 350 comes with a semi-digital unit. Though both are minimalist, the one on the HD400 appears more premium. The Harley-Davidson X 350’s other notable feature includes dual-channel ABS, and though we don’t know what features the HD400 will pack, we don’t expect it to be a feature-packed bike.
The Harley-Davidson X 350 is primarily intended for Asian markets, and is also used as a training bike at the H-D Riding Academy. Meanwhile, the Harley HD400 will debut in India as early as July 2023, and while the primary market would be India, it is likely to be exported to other countries as well.
