Among the gloom of the COVID-19 pandemic, one news shined through -- the rumour of TVS planning to buy British brand Norton Motorcycles. It’s no longer a rumour as the Hosur-based two-wheeler giant has sent out a release confirming its acquisition of the iconic motorcycle brand. TVS Motor Company hasn’t directly brought Norton Motorcycles, instead, it has completed the acquisition through one of its overseas subsidiaries. The all-cash deal cost the Indian company GBP16 million (Rs 153.12 crores).
TVS Motors has taken up the Herculean task to revive the fortunes of Norton, hoping to once again establish it as a premium bike manufacturer, as it becomes the latest owner of the British marque. We had a tete-a-tete with Sudarshan Venu, TVS’s Joint MD, on what we could expect from the deal. In this interaction, he laid out exactly what TVS has acquired, the immediate plans with Norton, whether they’ll bring Norton to India, and if so in what capacity as well as which bikes will Norton keep focussing on.
