Touring On The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450: 5 Things I Learnt

Three months and close to 3,000km later, the Eurogrip Trailhound SCR tyres on my KTM 390 Adventure X have now been tested primarily in city traffic and on highways. With the initial impressions well behind me, here’s how they’ve performed in everyday road-focused usage.
On tarmac, while the initial impressions were quite good, the Trailhound SCRs offer decent grip levels. That said, grip is still more than adequate for daily riding and touring, although the stock tyre set felt a bit grippier. During cornering, the tyres hold their line well and feel predictable, even when leaned over at speed.

Thanks to their rounder profile, when compared to the stock Apollo Trampler’s slightly wider build, high-speed lane changes feel easier and more fluid, making the bike feel slightly more flickable on open roads. In city conditions, the tyres feel light and easy to manage, allowing the bike to weave through traffic without requiring extra effort at the bars.
However, there are a couple of trade-offs. Under hard braking, the SCRs feel a bit vague and don’t inspire the same level of confidence, especially when braking aggressively. Highway runs also reveal higher tyre noise, which is likely due to the block-style tread pattern. At urban speeds, though, this noise isn’t very noticeable.
Fuel efficiency has taken a mild hit as well. Where the bike earlier returned around 22-23kmpl, it now consistently delivers close to 20kmpl, translating to a drop of roughly 1-2kmpl.

After nearly 3,000km of city commuting and highway touring, the Eurogrip Trailhound SCRs come across as decent all-rounders for the price they command. They’re easily available through dealerships and the brand’s official website, and they offer stable, predictable road manners with a few compromises in braking feel, noise, and efficiency.
Going forward, apart from continued city and highway use, my aim over the next few months will be to take the bike more off-road and onto light trails to see how these tyres perform beyond the tarmac. That phase of testing should reveal whether the Trailhound SCRs can truly live up to their dual-purpose promise.
