Mahindra dodged the Delhi diesel ban with the introduction of the 1.99-litre diesel motor earlier this year which it introduced in the XUV500 and the Scorpio. However, the XUV500, which was only available in its manual avatar, like the Scorpio, has now been launched with an automatic transmission. Mahindra hasn’t made any official word regarding this AT variant but its official website now has the details of the automatic version. The variant is available at Rs 14.51 lakh for the base W6 trim, while the top-end W10 goes up to Rs 17.32 lakh, and the middle W8 one at Rs 15.94 lakh (ex-showroom, New-Delhi).
The 6-speed automatic gearbox is the same unit which is paired with the 2.2-litre unit and is aimed at easing the driving effort for those who commute in the heavy Delhi traffic. The same transmission could also be expected in the Scorpio in near future.
The 1.99-litre engine is a 1997cc unit, to be precise, and is derived from the same 2.2-litre motor. Though, Mahindra has made sure that its power and torque figures remain intact with 142PS and 320Nm, respectively.
Meanwhile, Tata is also said to be working on a similar under 2.0-litre motor for the Safari which is powered by the 2.2-litre Varicor engine, currently debarred from Delhi-NCR region.
