The new Speed Twin puts out more power and gets better hardware

Triumph’s most affordable Bonneville, the Street Twin, is quite popular in India. But its elder sibling, the Speed Twin, hasn’t quite hit the mark yet. In an attempt to change that, the British bike maker has launched the new 2021 Speed Twin here, and it packs some interesting changes.

What’s The Price? Who Are Its Rivals?

The 2021 Speed Twin has been priced at Rs 10,99,000 (ex-showroom India), which is Rs 1.54 lakh more than before. It is available in three colours: Matte Storm Grey, Korosi Red, and Jet Black.

The Speed Twin’s arch-rivals are the Ducati Scrambler 1100 Pro Sport and the BMW R nineTWhile the former costs Rs 2.74 lakh more, the latter comes at a massive Rs 7.5 lakh over the Speed Twin. This makes the Triumph a much better prospect, money-wise.

What’s New?

Triumph has introduced a host of updates for the 2021 Speed Twin, with the most crucial one being to the engine. While it is powered by the same 1200cc parallel-twin motor, it now puts out 100PS and 112Nm, which is 3PS more than before. Moreover, the torque peaks at 500rpm lower, with Triumph claiming that 100Nm of the 112Nm kicks in from as low as 3000rpm. All this is thanks to lighter internals, high-compression pistons, a new intake system, and new stainless steel exhausts.

Complementing the more powerful heart are premium underpinnings, including 43mm Marzocchi USD fork and top-notch Brembo M50 monobloc calipers. And if twisties are your thing, you also get new lightweight 12-spoke alloy wrapped in grippy Metzeler Racetec RR tyres. The seat height has also increased to 809mm, 2mm more than before.

On the design front, the 2021 Speed Twin gets anodised headlight mounts, new mudguard mounts, and sportier graphics, while retaining the overall neo-retro silhouette.

What’s Unchanged?

The features are the same as before. These include LED lighting, a twin-pod semi-digital instrument cluster, three ride modes, and traction control.

Also, as mentioned above, the overall design of the bike remains as is -- the circular headlamp, flat seat, and indented fuel tank.

What Should Have Been Changed?

We feel the Speed Twin’s instrument cluster has become slightly dated. And even though we understand Triumph’s focus on an old-school setup, the unit could’ve been like the Trident 660’s, to make the package more appealing. Also, the USD fork misses out on any adjustability, which again, is a slight bummer.

At its price point, the Speed Twin is value-for-money. With all these updates, the bike has never been better, and we hope the domestic market realises the potential of the Speed Twin this time around.
