New shoes for the 390 Duke have arrived. Are they capable enough? Here are some early thoughts on the tyres

TVS Protorq Extreme

The thing that the KTM 390 Duke exploits the most, after your mental fortitude that is, are the tyres. When I bought my gen 3 Katoom, the first major upgrade that was almost immediately done was to change the tyres. The stock Metzeler Sportec M5 H-rated tyres were nowhere capable of handling the Duke’s raw performance. And until now, the switch to some extremely grippy aftermarket options has been extremely joyful. But after putting in close to 9500km on a set, it was time for some new soles for the Duke.

The Eurogrip Protorq Extremes have been highly praised, said to be one of the best for the sub-500cc performance motorcycles. While I have briefly experienced their potential on bikes like the Aprilia RS 457 and the Tuono 457, both of which have been extremely positive, I am yet to live with the same. Thankfully, TVS Srichakra came through and sent over a pair. Here are some of my initial impressions of the tyre in the first couple of weeks of using the 390 Duke.

Lean And Mean

At a combined 9 kilos of weight (4kg front and 5kg rear), the Protorqs certainly help in keeping the unsprung weight in check. From my previous set of tyres, which were a bit heavier, these new Protorqs have brought back the Duke’s extremely effortless flickable energy. It has taken me a couple of days to once again get the hang of such quick responses, something that I signed up for with the Duke.

Instant Grip

Usually, the first 250-500km is when you have got the bed in the tyres, get rid of the sheen left behind and then start to reap the benefits of great traction. However, right from the get go, the Protorqs feel ready to rip. I haven’t been going gung-ho, but neither have I been taking it easy (like the Duke allows you to either). It is just the sense that come what may, the tyres will not let go has arrived right from the start. In the last 1500-odd kilometres, this feeling was lost and I am glad it has come back.

Plan Ahead

It has been ages since I have done a leisurely ride to the local twisties. That is going to be the main agenda that needs to be tackled first. Hopefully, I will have clocked in enough miles in the meantime to properly set the tyres in to extract maximum fun.
