Quick read:

  • The TVS 160cc maxi scooter is slated for a late 2027 launch

  • Honda plans to launch the ADV160 by the end of 2026

  • Yamaha Nmax 155 could be launched early next year

The maxi-scooter scooter category in India is poised for significant growth as TVS, Honda and Yamaha could launch their products soon. These upcoming models, expected between late 2026 and 2027, will directly challenge the current offerings from Yamaha and Hero MotoCorp, signalling strong manufacturer confidence in the demand for premium, performance-oriented scooters.

A New Maxi Scooter Wave

India's maxi scooter segment, a niche space for performance and comfort, is about to become a hotly contested battlefield. The planned arrivals from Honda and TVS with high-specification, liquid-cooled engines suggest a strategic shift by major manufacturers. They are betting on a growing number of Indian buyers willing to pay a premium for scooters that offer more than just daily commuting practicality, pushing into territory currently held by a small number of models.

TVS 160cc Maxi Scooter

TVS Maxi Scooter

TVS Motor is developing an all-new 160cc maxi scooter. It is expected to debut in late 2027. This model will be positioned above the Ntorq 160  and could be built on an entirely new platform. It will mark a significant technical step for the brand, featuring the first liquid-cooled engine in a TVS scooter. The 160cc motor is expected to produce approximately 15PS.

The design will follow conventional maxi scooter lines, incorporating a central spine, a spacious seat, and a windscreen for better rider comfort. The scooter is expected to have 14-inch wheels, a full-LED lighting system, and a large connected instrument display, similar to the one on the TVS X electric scooter. It will have a traction control system, and ABS – no confirmation on whether it will be single or dual-channel; though, we hope it’s the latter.

The scooter could be priced at Rs 1.40 lakh (ex-showroom).

Honda ADV160

Honda is preparing to launch its ADV160 in India by the end of 2026, having already patented the design in India. The scooter is expected to be made in India, to ensure competitive pricing. It is expected to be priced at Rs 1.55 lakh (ex-showroom).

Powering the scooter is a liquid-cooled 155cc motor that churns out 16PS at 8,500rpm along with 14.7Nm at 6,500rpm. The feature set includes a 5-inch TFT touchscreen with smartphone pairing that enables navigation prompts, call and SMS notifications, plus music playback control. Keyless ignition is also part of the package. For everyday usability, there's a 30-litre boot under the seat and a front cubby with a USB Type-C port. It has a segment-leading 8.1-litre fuel tank. Suspension duties are handled by a telescopic fork up front and twin Showa shocks at the rear, with wheels measuring 14 inches at the front and a 13-inch at the rear.

Yamaha Nmax 155

Yamaha is expected to strengthen its maxi-scooter lineup in India. The brand’s upcoming Yamaha NMax 155 is anticipated to be its answer to the expanding competition. It will be powered by a 155cc liquid-cooled engine, similar to the Aerox. It also gets a ton of features like an LCD cluster, keyless ignition, auto stop-start tech and more.

It will be priced somewhere around Rs 1.5 lakh (ex-showroom), which will be slightly more expensive than the Aerox.

ZigSays

The maxi-scooter segment in India is evolving and is ready for more sophisticated and powerful two-wheelers. For buyers, the launch of these scooters would mean more choice, higher performance, and access to features previously reserved for motorcycles. Ultimately, the competition will accelerate innovation and value in a segment that is quickly moving beyond the basics.
