Honda has patented the PCX 160 scooter in India
It’s a premium maxiscooter powered by a 160cc liquid-cooled engine
Costs IDR 33,750,000 in Indonesia (around Rs 1.72 lakh)
Honda has patented the design of the PCX 160 in India. The PCX 160 is Honda’s maxi-scooter designed to cater to the premium scooter segment. It is also the successor to the PCX150, with a slightly different design and a bigger engine, first launched in 2020.
While Honda has patented the PCX 160 in India, this is not the first product that the Japanese brand has secured. Honda periodically patents its international products in India to secure the legal rights of its products. This allows Honda the right to own the product’s design and name rights in India. It means that no other manufacturer can sell any product in India with Honda’s patented name and design. Just like the PCX 160, Honda has patented other international products such as the Vario 160, CG 160 Start, NPF 125, Beat, NX125, Stylo 160 and many more.
Unfortunately, Honda patenting the PCX 160 in India holds no grounds to its launch here considering none of its other products that have been patented here have ever been launched. Even though the scooter segment is maturing, and the maxi-scooter segment is also spicing up of late, the category is still niche. Honda has a history of being overtly cautious in its market approach for the Indian market. The latest proof is the Activa e:. Hence, it’s pretty evident that Honda may not find the niche segment lucrative enough to bring the PCX160 to our shores. Even if it wants to, the scooter will have to be brought via the CKD (Completely Knocked Down) route, making it prohibitively expensive for what it offers.
