Don't compare base models. Both have different power output and transmission. If you want similar torque (260 Nm ) and hp(108 bhp) you have to get nexon diesel. And yet ev has 270 Nm and 126 bhp. Then about the auto transmission in the ev . Hence you can only compare a diesel automatic with the base model ev. Ev cost 14 and and ICE costs close to 11. So only three lakh difference. Tax benefits extra. Fuel cost of ICE is 5 rupee per km and EV is only one rupee. So within 60km you already offset the price. Insurance maybe expensive but maintenance and service is cheaper.(while the 8 year warranty lasts) . Moreover you are saving the bloody planet. Bonus of instant torque, fastest in segment and no engine noise.

Advent | 3 years agoI have electric scooter....battery cost is around 30000rs with 2000 charging cycles....means per charge 15rs,..10rs per charge electricity cost....means 25 rs per 70 kilometer..,but it's 25rs per 50 km.....but 2 people can't sit at a time....that's why it's 50 rs per 50 km....but to gain it's full benefit of 50rs per 50km you have to charge it twice and run 100km every day... Because the battery warranty is only 3 years means 1000 days and the charging cycle is 2000....but in reality you can charge once in 2 days...therefore it is 200rs per 50 km...means a electric scooter is more costly than running a petrol car..
Abhinav | 2 years agoPer Kw battery cost is around 100USD that is around Rs 7500/kw at 1USD to INR at 75 (Aug 2021 ) so cost of battery in Nexon EV will be around 30kw = 30* ₹7500/- - around Rs 2.5-3lac .according to reports around 5 lacs is additional cost for manufacturing EV at 30kw as compared to same model of ICE . tata is selling EV at minimum profit of 15-20% or less than that so the cost of nexon EV is lower as compared to other car makers.In terms of changing the complete battery pack after 8years warranty or 1.5lac km the total cost will be less than 3lacs as with time the cost of batteries are reducing and efficiency is increasing. MILIND | 3 years agoIf you calculate that your battery will go in scrap after 10 years and new battery will cost 4 lac rupees at today pricing then....then why are you not calculating that 4 lac rupees battery runs for another 10 years..... But now government is promoting production of lithium iron battery the price of battery will goes down by 25 - 30 % in next 10 years and so battery goes down to below 3 lacs....So 3 lacs for next 10 years is not a bad deal....On other hand petrol car will just goes in almost scrap in 20 years or use of 3 lac km like ev car.....So ev car is not at all bad deal if you are recently planing for 15 lac rupees car.....And in ev cars there is no maintenance at all of engine oil radiator and other parts like in petrol car....So the bottom line is if you are planing for car more the 5 years and your driving per month is more then 1000 km then month then you can definitely get backall your money back in 5 years....But the only negative point of ev is the range of cars.....

Will like to comment on all the points raised but for starters you are not saving the planet with EVs infact currently you are helping it to dig its own grave. More than 80% electricity produced in India is through coal based Power plants which generate and higher lever of pollution than a petrol engine or diesel engine. We can happily compare present costing as petrol diesel are at an all time high and we are issuing subsidies for EVs but subsidies can only remain for a short period of time thill the consumer base is low. Still we do not have 100% household electricity in many parts of the country and EV charging will put that additional burden which acceding to me can increase electricity costs. I do feel that a misconception about charging station availability is not that big an issue as minimum range is around 200 and most of us don’t drive that much on a single day. Amazing tech but needs a lot of back end work so that it becomes feasible for majority
Sanket | 2 years agoI would like to correct one point here. Many have mentioned that the life of the battery will be 1.5 lac km. But Tata is giving a warranty of 1.6 lac km. So as a general rule with a warranty, the battery will last much longer than that. Even if it lasts another 50k km, that will still be a good saving of a few more lacs. The battery will still have a lot of life left for other applications. It will be reused for power backup and other such applications before being scrapped. So you will definitely get some value even for battery exchange.

I think I can give you a justification or rite comparison of Nexon . Nexon ev xz+ is on road Chennai was 15.5l. rite comparison in diesel was zxa+ which was 12.5l. running cost for ev was 1rs per km where as for diesel was aprox 6rs per km. As diesel or petro ice have more complex mechanism and maintenance , periodic maintenance and is high and on the run tata will earn money in terms of service cost. But where as ev are maintanence free, tata will have a small premium on ev .In comparison ev are cost effective and eco friendly to earth For frequent mobility, daily fixed distance A to B , B to A travel ev will be hassle free. For long distance travel over the coming period in increasing ev infrastructure, that will also be hassle free.For low mile rider non frequent riders go for petrol it will save money in initial investment.That's simple!!!!

Phone or laptop batteries are not designed to last for over 1 yr at full capacity. EV batteries have to last long. Lot of cars do over 2 lac kms. Most cars see 1 lac kms. With phones or laptop, you will not get a warranty of over 1 yr on batteries unless those are long life batteries. Tata gives 1.6 lac kms/8 yrs warranty. Cant be compared. The batteries are not the same. Just for ref, CHevy Volt batteries have shown marginal degradation after almost 10 yrs of usage. So rest assured, you wont have to compare them with phone and laptops batteries.
Ashish | 3 years agoAs Tata Nexon ev have 31Kwh li-ion battery which is very expensive now a days. 1Wh battery price can between Rs.15-18. Hence 31Kwh should be Rs. 4.5 Lakh to 5.5 Rs.Lakh. Note: Above price is just an approximation according to current lithium ion/ lithium ion phosphate batteries.
Prajeesh | 2 years agoEven if the battery life is 1.5 Lakh Kms and the battery cost is 400000 per kilometer cost will be Rs 2.6 plus electricity charge aproax 1.75 per kilometer so the total cost per kilometer will be Rs 4.35. The aproaximate mileage of a diesel car will be 15 Km per litter . The aproaximate cost of per km would be Rs 6.6 , still the electric vehicle is profitable. If you able ro use solar power then you can reduce the cost again.
Rajasekhar | 3 years ago320km per charge is in general not valid - unless the road is highway/plain & one travel consistently at 40kmph speed, or even consider city road braking efficiency take 70% of 320km as nominal for calculations. 240/200 ~ Re. 1 or 1.2/km is meaningful. (With say ₹240 per charge and a 240-200km range realization)

Why can't EV and petrol options not be offered in the same car? Sorry, but the argument didn't make sense to me. What did I miss? Plus there is saving with every kilometer, ease of driving, a different experience, and super low emissions. Other than that, the novelty factor of being an EV owner will still be there for a few years now.

Calcuation is wrong. Price Per kilometre is to be calcuated 248 / 320 = 0. 78 . Adding additional costs and efficiency of battery it may be higher. Battery replacement cost also should be taken to account.

Very good calculation keep it up!!! Ev is mile munching machine .it's will be very effective when your requirement is driving more kms per day. If your need is above 100+km per day it will be effective.Also done relate battery cycle with its warranty period.

Hello Hemant, your calculations is wrong for per km. It's more cheaper 248(cost of charging for 31Kwh at Rs 8 per unit) /320km (full charged) =Rs 0.78.

Dear friend there's calculation mistake. If it runs 320kms for 248 Rs. The mileage will be 248/320 ie. 77.5 paise per km. Isn't it.

Warranty is to cover manufacturing defects while running the equipment for sometimes, not to cover the product wear & tear after usage.

It will be ₹ 0.77 (77 paise) per kilometre not ₹ 1.29/km. Or in other words you can say 1.29 km/rupee.

All 3 petrol diesel and electric torque are given by TATA, so there is no logic to compare the torques.

Wrong math, it would be 248/320 and that would come less than a rupee/km.

You have forgot to add oil service costs in a petrol or diesel car. then the labour charges .

Wrong calculation it's should be 248/320=0.775 / km. Check your maths again bro.

Uday | 2 years ago@ Sanket | I would like to correct one point here. Many have mentioned that the life of the battery will be 1.5 lac km. But Tata is giving a warranty of 1.6 lac km. So as a general rule with a warranty, the battery will last much longer than that. Even if it lasts another 50k km, that will still be a good saving of a few more lacs. The battery will still have a lot of life left for other applications. It will be reused for power backup and other such applications before being scrapped. So you will definitely get some value even for battery exchange.
How long our phone and laptop li-ion batteries lasts? Same with EV

More than 80% electricity produced in India is through coal based Power plants which generate and higher lever of pollution than a petrol engine or diesel engine. We can happily compare present costing as petrol diesel are at an all time high and we are issuing subsidies for EVs but subsidies can only remain for a short period of time thill the consumer base is low. Still we do not have 100% household electricity in many parts of the country and EV charging will put that additional burden which acceding to me can increase electricity costs. I do feel that a misconception about charging station availability is not that big an issue as minimum range is around 200 and most of us don’t drive that much on a single day. Amazing tech but needs a lot of back end work so that it becomes feasible for majority
