Rear-engine, rear wheel-drive. It shouldn’t work. One million units prove otherwise.

Dr Wolfgang Porsche with the millionth 911

“54 years ago, I was able to take my first trips over the Grossglockner High Alpine Road with my father. The feeling of being in a 911 is just as enjoyable now as it was then. That’s because the 911 has ensured that the core values of our brand are as visionary today as they were in the first Porsche 356/1 from 1948," Dr Wolfgang Porsche's words drip passion. He's been involved in the 911 project since day one. We're pretty sure he's one proud man today.

The millionth 911 has rolled off the assembly line in Zuffenhausen. It's a Carrera S finished in a bespoke 'Irish Green' shade with 'numerous exclusive features' as a tribute to the original 911 that debuted in 1963. Oddly enough, that's all that Porsche has to say about the millionth Neunelfer. But, look closely - and the minute details are noticeable. For starters, the wing mirrors are finished in silver, while the wheels are gunmetal grey. Other throwback elements include the mesh grille on the engine deck lid, and the 911 lettering in gold. And yes, it gets its own '911 Nr. 1000000' badge as well.

The 911 has always been the people's supercar. Over the past five decades, it's become an icon in its own right owing to its stellar motorsport pedigree and the blend of performance and practicality it offers. Porsche also tells us over 70 per cent of all 911s ever built are in a 'ready to drive' condition. That says a lot about their reliability, doesn't it?

The millionth 911 will first take a pitstop at the Porsche Museum. It then embarks on a world tour 'that will include road trips in the Scottish Highlands, around the Nürburgring, the USA, China and beyond' say Porsche.
