Earlier this year, KTM, Yamaha, Honda, and Piaggio had announced the common swappable battery tech and signed the letter of intent. Now, the four companies have officially signed an agreement for the Swappable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium (SBMC).
The primary objectives of the deal will be to develop standard technical specifications for the battery packs, confirm the usage of the battery system, and promote and standardise the tech for the European EV two-wheeler market, which can be later followed by other regions.
Benefiting from the swappable battery technology will be motorcycles and lightweight electric scooters. After the battery packs are promoted as standard, all four companies can then also develop their individual EVs, which will benefit from the mutually swappable tech.
In India, Revolt Motors has already facilitated the battery swap stations for its RV400 electric motorcycle. Check out our review of the bike to know more.
Back in 2019, the Japanese big four (Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, and Kawasaki), too, had joined hands for the swappable battery solution. With the aim to curb range anxiety, the four have been working together to develop common battery technology and packaging.
All said and done, Bajaj should also benefit from the consortium, thanks to its ties with KTM. Once the tech is standardised, Bajaj could possibly provide affordable EV options for the Indian market.
