Royal Enfield has an electric bike in the pipeline and we all know about that. And now, excerpts from Eicher Motors’ (Royal Enfield’s parent company) most recent post earnings call meeting have revealed more about the upcoming Royal Enfield electric bike.

For starters, the brand is setting up a separate commercial team, one that’ll solely handle the brand’s EV department. This team is led by Umesh Krishnappa (former Chief Technology Officer at Ola Electric) and also has Mario Alvisi (ex-Ducati employee) as the Chief Growth Officer. Publicly, Royal Enfield’s electric journey began way back in 2022, but a major step was when the brand acquired Stark Future, a Spanish electric dirt bikemaker in December 2022. Then there were reports of the brand working on a dedicated EV platform (codenamed ‘L’). Such a platform could then pave the way for multiple designs, helping the bikemaker to cater to different types of audiences.

But Royal Enfield’s first electric outing came towards late 2023 with the Himalayan Electric, a rugged ADV that was unveiled at EICMA 2023. That said, we highly doubt that the brand’s first ever electric offering will be an adventure bike. The ADV segment is a niche one and even more importantly, people buy them for long distance trips, something electric bikes can’t exactly do just as freely given the current level of battery technology, not to mention our limited charging infrastructure. Instead, Royal Enfield’s first electric bike could be something like a nice retro roadster that has decent performance, good enough range for your urban commutes and most importantly, is affordable to a larger audience.

We might just get a glimpse of it this year…maybe a prototype of the final production version at EICMA 2024. As for the launch, that won’t happen this financial year, as Royal Enfield itself confirmed in this call. We think the launch could be sometime in early 2026 (or if we’re lucky, late 2025) and the price tag could be around Rs 2.50 lakh, ex-showroom. And if you’re a Royal Enfield fan and think that’s too long to wait, we have news about the Royal Enfield Hunter 450’s launch timeline too!
