From practical 125cc scooters to sporty 155cc ones, this year has been a delight for scooter enthusiasts too. Here is our pick for the top five scooters launched in 2021

This year, the scooter segment matured significantly as several scooters were launched, many with segment-first features. These new entrants have proved that scooters are more than merely a convenient means of transportation. Take a look at the top five scooters that came out this year:

TVS NTorq 125 Race XP:

The TVS NTorq 125 was already one of the most feature-packed, performance-oriented scooters in the 125cc segment. TVS then took it a notch higher with the launch of the NTorq 125 Race XP variant, complete with segment-first riding modes (Race and Street). This scooter was even more powerful than the standard variant, and also comes with voice assist.

All the extra performance also made it the quickest 125cc scooter on sale in India. TVS has priced the Race XP at Rs 84,025 (ex-Delhi), which is just Rs 3,700 more than the Race Edition.

Yamaha Aerox 155:

The Yamaha Aerox 155 is by far the most powerful and the sportiest scooter in the Indian market in the affordable space. Its aggressive styling is complemented by the Yamaha R15-derived heart, and the Aerox is practical too, thanks to the generous 24.5-litre underseat storage and apron-mounted cubby hole with USB charging  port. It even gets a smartphone-connected instrument cluster.

We took the Yamaha Aerox 155 out for a test and it turned out to be an absolutely lovable scooter. Yamaha has priced it at Rs 1,29,000 (ex-showroom Delhi).

Though TVS had the highly capable NTorq, the Hosur-based manufacturer didn’t really have anything for mature buyers in the 125cc segment. Hence, the TVS Jupiter 125 was launched, slotting between the more affordable Jupiter 110 and the sportier NTorq 125. TVS has loaded the Jupiter 125 to the brim with practical touches. It comes with a unique floorboard-mounted fuel tank with an apron-mounted fuel tank cap for extra convenience. This has also resulted in a massive 33-litre underseat storage.

And if that wasn’t enough, TVS has also equipped it with an apron-mounted storage compartment with integrated charging port and luggage hooks. If you’re planning to buy one, check out how it fared in our road test review. As for the pricing, the Jupiter 125 starts from Rs 73,400 (ex-showroom Delhi) for the base drum variant.

Yamaha RayZR 125 Hybrid:

Yamaha unveiled the RayZR 125 Hybrid earlier this year, and then in September, the Japanese bike maker launched the scooter, making it the first mild-hybrid scooter in the country. It is equipped with a silent starter that doubles up as an electric motor, giving the engine an extra push while accelerating from standstill. The electric assistance only lasts for a few seconds but has helped improve the scooter’s efficiency

Other updates include an LED headlight and a smartphone-compatible instrument cluster. That said, there’s no turn-by-turn navigation. This sporty scooter is priced from Rs 76,830 (ex-showroom Delhi). There’s also a sportier Street Rally variant with knuckle guards, slightly sportier looking apron and side panels, and block-pattern tyres.

2021 Aprilia SR160:

The Aprilia SR160 has been the longest-standing sporty scooter in the 150+cc segment. For 2021, the scooter received a neat facelift along with a few feature updates. It finally received an LED headlight, a redesigned LED tail lamp, split seat setup, and a full-LCD instrument cluster with optional smartphone connectivity. Oh, and for extra practicality, there’s an underseat storage light and USB charging port as standard too.

The scooter is priced at Rs 1,17,494 (ex-showroom Pune), making it around Rs 10,500 dearer than its predecessor. Apart from the Yamaha Aerox 155, there are no other natural rivals to this scooter in its segment. Check out our detailed road-test review to see how the scooter fares in the real world.
