KTM 390 Enduro R First Ride Review | Should You Pick It Over The ADV?...

KTM recently increased the prices of the 390 Adventure X, and it is now priced at Rs 3,26,178 (a Rs 22,410 increase), thanks to GST 2.0. Meanwhile, the price of the 390 Enduro R (India-spec variant) has remained almost the same, as it now costs Rs 3,39,227 (Rs 2,727 more than when it was launched). While the price difference was quite a bit pre-GST 2.0 (Rs 32,732), it has now been reduced to just Rs 13,049. All prices ex-showroom, Delhi. With such a small gap between the two, the big question is — Which motorcycle should you put your money down on, and why?
At first glance, both bikes share the same 399cc single-cylinder motor, delivering identical performance figures on paper (46PS and 39Nm). However, the biggest difference here is that the 390 Enduro R gets a larger rear sprocket for better off-road prowess with a stronger low-end grunt. On the other hand, the KTM 390 Adventure X is a more road-biased ADV. It is meant for riders who want a versatile machine that can handle daily commutes, highway touring, and the occasional broken road or light trail without breaking a sweat.

Its 19-inch front wheel, more road-friendly tyres (Apollo Trampler XR), and relatively plusher setup make it ideal for long-distance touring (Yes, even better than the more expensive, spoke wheel-equipped 390 Adventure!), especially if your adventures involve a good mix of tarmac and rough patches (which are anyway inevitable in our country). Add to that a better wind protection and more relaxed ergonomics - the Adventure X makes a strong case for riders who clock miles on highways and enjoy comfort over extreme off-road ability.

The KTM 390 Enduro R, on the other hand, is for those who instinctively turn towards a trail when they see one. With a larger 21-inch front wheel, off-road-focused tyres (Mitas Enduro Trail), adjustable suspension, higher ground clearance at 253mm (25mm more), and a more focused off-road setup, it feels far more at home in the dirt. It’s lighter, more agile over technical terrain, and encourages you to stand up and attack trails rather than just glide over them.

Comfort and practicality also play a role. The Adventure X offers better usability in traffic and doesn’t feel intimidating in everyday conditions due to its low seat height of 825mm. The Enduro R’s tall seat height (860mm) and focused ergonomics might be a bit too hardcore for daily city riding, especially for shorter riders or those who frequently deal with stop-and-go traffic.

If your idea of adventure riding involves highways, Ladakh trips, weekend breakfast runs to the ghats, and the occasional gravel road, the KTM 390 Adventure X is the smarter, more rounded, value-for-money choice. But if your heart beats faster at the thought of serious off-roading, river crossings, and technical trails, the 390 Enduro R justifies its higher price with its specialised hardware.
With the price gap now narrower than ever, the decision boils down to one simple question: Are you more of an explorer or a trailblazer? Your answer will point you straight to the KTM bike that will feel at home in your garage.
