KTM 390 Enduro R First Ride Review | Should You Pick It Over The ADV?...

KTM India has made a big announcement – one that would be appreciated by off-road enthusiasts. The 2025 KTM 390 Enduro R launch will happen soon. While we are excited about it, the bike isn’t really meant for everyone.
It could be priced lucratively, and in fact, be more affordable than one of its 399cc siblings. But that’s only relevant if you like going off the beaten path in search of a rather dirt-y experience.
You see, the KTM 390 Enduro R isn’t your run-of-the-mill adventure bike. For that you have the 390 Adventure. The Enduro is a bike for those that look at tarmac as a way to get to the trails. For all intents and purposes of simpler understanding, look at the Enduro as an off-road bike with all the necessary bits to make it road legal. But underneath all that is a bike that’s quite hardcore. You have tubeless spoked wheels with knobby tyres and 230mm wheel travel on both ends, a really tall handlebar, a seat slim enough to make a Victoria’s Secret supermodel envious, off-road spec bodywork, completely switchable ABS, and (just) a 9-litre fuel tank. The latter will also help in maintaining the bike’s slim profile, and keeping the weight down. Also, it has a super tall seat height of 890mm – not really ideal for a market in which people complain about anything taller than 790mm. Adding to its go-anywhere credentials, it has a massive 272mm ground clearance. Also, it has a 4.2-inch slim display that prominently shows the speed and the gear - not your revs. It also has turn-by-turn navigation and music control for making tarmac riding un-dreary.
All of these aspects make it more focussed for off-road than highway riding. For the latter you have the KTM 390 Adventure or the 390 Adventure X. The 390 ADV also gets more in terms of a detailed display, a bigger seat, suspension with finer adjustability, more rider aids, bigger brake discs, a larger 13.5-litre fuel tank, and then some. In contrast, the 390 Adventure X misses out on a lot of things, like suspension adjustability, cruise control, etc. The 390 Adventure is priced at Rs 3,36,977, while the Adventure X at Rs 2,91,140 (both prices ex-showroom, Delhi). Considering what the 390 Enduro R gets, we think it will be priced around Rs 3.3 lakh (ex-showroom), slotting it right between the two 390 ADVs.
If we are right on the price, it will go squarely against the Kawasaki KLX 230. If so, the Enduro would be a much better proposition for offroading enthusiasts. Not only because the KTM is more powerful, but also because of domestic manufacturing, it will have cheaper spares; KTM also has a more wide-spread service network and cheaper service costs. All of these are super important, especially for offroading, since spills, falls, and crashes are a common occurrence. Offroaders need more aftersales support than regular tarmac riders. The Enduro will also be a good bike to upgrade from the Hero XPulse 200. We shall know for sure how it will be positioned when it is launched in a few weeks.
