Is this the best sub-500cc ADV in India? We find out

BMW F 450 GS

BMW Motorrad recently launched the long-awaited F 450 GS in India. We got a chance to ride this parallel-twin adventure tourer at its launch event in Goa, and here’s a look our top likes and dislikes:

Things We Liked About The BMW F 450 GS:

Engine and performance

BMW F 450 GS

The F 450 GS comes with an all-new 420cc parallel-twin motor, that might not blow your mind, but it gets the job done really well. It has a strong mid-range and excellent tractability, which means you can lazily cruise around the city at low revs and higher gears, or comfortably sit at 100–120kmph out on the highway.

Overtakes are effortless too, just twist the throttle and it picks up pace quite easily. That said, the overall performance is quite good, but its not explosive or aggressive. It quite smooth, predictable. It’s very usable, for touring and daily riding, that matters more than outright excitement.

Handling

BMW F 450 GS

This is easily one of the strongest areas of the bike. The F 450 GS feels light, well-balanced and surprisingly agile for an ADV.

Whether it’s about cornering or quick direction changes, the bike feels confident and composed. Overall, it feels more capable than what you might initially push it to do. If you enjoy spirited riding on an ADV, this one will put a smile on your face.

Strong touring comfort

BMW F 450 GS

BMW F 450 GS offers very comfortable ergonomics. The riding position is natural, spacious and very comfortable for long hours on the saddle. There’s plenty of room to move around, the seat is accommodating, and the adjustable levers let you fine-tune your overall setup.

Premium build quality

BMW F 450 GS

The moment you get on the bike, it feels like a proper BMW product. The fit and finish, overall design and attention to detail give it a premium appeal. It genuinely feels like a scaled-down version of the bigger BMW GS motorcycles, which adds to the ownership experience.

Things We Did Not Like

Missing features

BMW F 450 GS

The F 450 GS comes loaded with modern electronics and features that you’d expect at this price point. You get a proper TFT console, multiple ride modes, switchable traction control and more. However, despite being feature-rich, there are some noticeable omissions. Cruise control is a big miss, especially for a bike that is clearly built for touring. TPMS would have also been a very useful addition. At this price, these are features that buyers will definitely expect.

Price And Maintenance

BMW F 450 GS

This is where things get a bit tricky. At a starting price of Rs 4.70 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the F 450 GS is not cheap, and once you start looking at the higher variants, the price climbs up quite a bit.

On top of that, BMW ownership typically comes with higher service and maintenance costs. So, it’s not just expensive to buy, but also to keep.
