BMW F 450 GS Lands in India

The BMW F 450 GS has finally been launched in India at Rs 4.70 lakh (ex-showroom). Three variants: Basic, Exclusive, and GS Trophy – decide how much tech and hardware you get. The design sticks close to the GS identity: beak, sharp lines, X-shaped LED DRL – like the BMW R 1300 GS. And the rear is slim and looks purposeful – like the BMW F 900 GS.

The Heart Of The Matter

You get an all-new 420cc, parallel-twin pushing 47.6PS at 8,750rpm and 43Nm at 6,750rpm, paired to a 6-speed gearbox. Top speed is a claimed 165kmph, and it supposedly darts from 0 to 100kmph in 5.9 seconds. Now coming to the most important question for us Indians: ‘Kitna deti hai?’ Well, BMW says 26kmpl, and with the 14-litre tank – that’s roughly 320km between fuel stops.

Easy Does It

The standout is the Easy Ride Clutch (ERC) on the GS Trophy variant. It’s a centrifugal system that automatically engages and disengages based on revs. You can start, crawl, and ride without touching the clutch, yet still retain full engine braking and manual override when needed. And, with the bidirectional quickshifter on the Exclusive and GS Trophy variants, you can basically forget the clutch exists.

Almost A Featherweight

At 178kg kerb, it’s genuinely light for an ADV. For reference, the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 weighs 196kg, and KTM 390 Adventure X is 182kg. Other important figures include: 845mm seat height, XXmm ground clearance, and 180mm wheel travel at both ends. Wheel sizes are 19-inch front and 17 rear, with proper dual-purpose rubber – sized 100/90 and 130/80, respectively. It gets a 310mm front disc with a Brembo 4-piston caliper, a 240mm and single-piston at the rear.

The tubular steel frame is suspended by a 43mm USD fork and a preload adjustable monoshock with travel-dependent damping  – Both from KYB. Only the GS Trophy variant has compression and rebound adjustability on the front. All variants get alloy wheels as standard but the tubeless cross-spoke wheels are optional if you want to go off-road pro. 

Packs In A Lot

A 6.5-inch TFT handles connectivity duties (phone alerts, navigation, music controls), which also shows lean angle and braking data. Rider aids include cornering ABS, switchable traction control, engine brake control, multiple ride modes: Rain, Road, and Enduro, with the additional Enduro Pro on higher trims. You also get all-LED lighting, heated grips, adjustable levers, and USB type-C charging. Interestingly, though, it misses out on cruise control – which the KTM 390 Adventure offers even on the entry-level X variant.

ZigSays

With the F 450 GS, the BMW has the avenue to appeal to the younger buyers, especially in developed markets. The entry-level GS may not democratise the brand in India, but it will undeniably make it that much more attainable. It packs in a lot of features, as well as optional accessories that enhance its utility.
