Expert's Opinion on Apache RTX 300

Overview

Chill ADV Tourer

• It has certainly been a long time coming. An ADV from TVS is something that should’ve arrived sooner. But TVS likes to take its time to get things right. And the Apache RTX 300 is by no means a rebadged or restyled BMW G 310 GS. It is a ground-up new motorcycle. So, is TVS late to the party or has it made something worth the wait?

Design

Bold And Imposing

• TVS has got the proportions of the RTX 300 right. It is not overly large or intimidating, neither is it shrunken like a pseudo-ADV. It has got a broad face with the twin LED headlamp look feeling eerily similar to larger ADVs like the Triumph Tiger Sport series or the Aprilia Tuaregs. The windshield is tall enough but not adjustable.
• It does give you the feeling that the bike is solid and substantial as TVS has made sure quality levels do not drop. Each panel looks neatly finished, each wire is cleanly tucked away and there’s little to complain about the fit and finish. The toothed footpegs are rather chunky and have got a particularly thick rubber insert, which you will need tools to remove. This is the only item that looks a bit out of place but its purpose is evident: reduce vibrations.

Performance & Mileage

Relaxing And Calm Engine

• The brand new RTXD4 engine makes its debut as the 299cc mill pushes out 36PS and 28.5Nm in a chill manner. It is relaxed, revs freely but in a rather steady manner and is pretty tractable as well. It has three distinct zones of riding experience where the initial zone up to 5000rpm, the bike will ride along peacefully. This is great for commuting as even in fourth gear, the bike was capable of being ridden at speeds of 40kmph. Steep climbs could be taken in second without the bike bogging down.
• Once you reach 5000rpm, you get a sense that the engine wants to give you some form of thrill but it is still restrained. The motor feels happy between 5000-7000rpm and it is clearly where TVS feels the majority of its buyers will remain. The sensation is of a motor that is in its sweet zone without feeling stressed. And post 7000rpm is where you really get the juices flowing on the RTX 300. However, given the tight and twisty test route, the chance to open up the motor and make it sing were next to none.
• Even refinement levels are under check and nothing alarming like the 313cc mill of the RR 310/RTR 310. The buzziness starts creeping in post 6000rpm and it does become more serious as the revs climb up. But given a relatively heavier crank put in place, the vibes don’t feel particularly harsh or unbearable. There’s just enough to make you feel that the motor is pulsating, nothing to make you disgruntled after a long ride.
• In order to save costs, TVS has switched from a pressure-sensor based quickshifter to a mechanical one, using a rotational sensor, like the KTMs. Given the engine’s rather calm revving nature, the quickshifter works slickly and without any glitches. Each shift is precise and positive with minimal effort needed to change cogs.

Handling

Stable Ride

• We spent close to 150km with the Apache RTX 300 in the foothills of the Himalayas where the roads were completely broken up for nearly the entire ride. Smooth sections were far and few with barely any chance to put it thoroughly though its paces. As a result, we cannot comment too much on the handling abilities of the bike.
• Braking performance is solid and confidence-inspiring with switchable ABS allowing you to be in better control when the terrain becomes tricky.

Ride Quality

Composed And Undeterred

• Over any sort of terrain, the RTX 300 remained composed and undeterred. The 180mm wheel travel at both ends is more than adequate for handling broken tarmac stretches and rough terrain. Asking it to be serious off-road is going to be laborious and not enjoyable. Hence, as a tool, it is great to take you to places that you have never been before.

Comfort & Storage

Upright And Comfy

• The riding posture on the Apache RTX 300 is spot on for endless touring. The spacious and well padded seat is set on the higher side at 835mm, which might sound a little challenging for shorter riders but it actually is not. The midsection is slim enough for riders shorter than 5ft 5in to find their footing with the weight cleverly packaged closer to the rider.
• The bars are nice and wide with not that much of a reach to get to the controls. Hugging the tank is easy with the pegs neatly positioned to give you a relaxing touring stance. Even transitioning to a stand-up posture can be quickly executed allowing the rider to lock into the bike well.

Features

Not Overloaded With Features

• TVS products of late have been focusing more on techy and glitzy stuff. Thankfully, the feature set of the Apache RTX 300 includes the absolute necessary and cool bits with nothing being over the top.
• It too gets four riding modes that can be changed in a cyclic manner: Urban, Rain, Tour and Rally. The last mode also switches off traction control as well as rear ABS for better control during off tarmac excursions. Cruise control is also available as standard while a new bi-directional quickshifter is only available on the Top and BTO trims.
• With the Top trim, the same TFT screen from the RTR 310 is employed here. Hence, navigating through the menu or changing the modes on the fly remains as easy. Also, bits like phone navigation mirroring and Bluetooth connectivity get added to the mix. TPMS is the only additional missing tech feature that the BTO kit features.

Verdict

Great Start

• The Apache RTX 300 is a little late to the party but also similarly worth the wait. It does the task of an ADV tourer well as it will allow the rider to go places in a rather chill manner. It won’t be the most thrilling or the most capable ADV in the sub-500 cc space. But considering the delightful introductory asking price of Rs 1.99 lakh for the base trim, Rs 2.14 lakh for the Top trim and Rs 2.29 lakh for the BTO variant, TVS has nailed the value proposition well. So, as a starter tool for the new ADV rider that doesn’t want to mess around with off-roading as much, the Apache RTX 300 will be a solid option to consider.

i love this adventure bike with affordable price not so expensive and i'm done the test ride and i love it mileage is awesome and handling is so good but little vibration is your speed under 110 this negative but comfort level is 10/10 man i really love this bike i will 2 months buying the bike 1st ride go to mahabaleshwar.
