Royal Enfield has launched the new Himalayan 440 in India, bringing back the more rugged and straightforward adventure motorcycle formula at a more accessible price point. Positioned below the Himalayan 450 in Royal Enfield’s line-up, the Himalayan 440 gets the same engine as the Scram 440, but combines it with more off-road-focused hardware. 

Design

The Himalayan 440 gets a rugged and purposeful design that stays true to the Himalayan family’s adventure-focused character. It gets a round LED headlight, simple indicators with orange lens, a familiar tail light, tall stance, large front wheel and a simple, functional design that should appeal to riders looking for a no-nonsense ADV. The motorcycle is available in three colour options: Mustang Brown, Nelong White and Sela Black.

Engine

RE Himalayan 440

Powering the Himalayan 440 is the same 443cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine as the Scram 440. The engine produces 25.4bhp and 34Nm and comes paired with a six-speed gearbox. The motor is particularly impressive for its refinement, with a strong low-end and midrange that makes it easy to ride on broken roads and trails. The addition of the six-speed gearbox also gives the Himalayan 440 better highway legs, allowing it to cruise more comfortably than the older Himalayan 411.

Underpinnings

The Himalayan 440 is built around long-travel suspension, with 200mm of travel at the front and 180mm at the rear. It also gets 220mm of ground clearance, allowing it to tackle rough terrain without scraping its underbelly. Braking duties are handled by a 300mm front disc and a 240mm rear disc. The combination of long suspension travel, generous ground clearance and switchable ABS should make the Himalayan 440 quite capable once the road ends.

The Himalayan 440 keeps its equipment list simple and functional. It gets a clean instrument console featuring an analogue speedometer with a digital inset, giving it a classic look while still displaying essential information. A Tripper navigation pod is offered as standard, adding turn-by-turn navigation without making the main console overly complicated. It also gets switchable dual-channel ABS, allowing riders to turn off the rear ABS when riding on loose surfaces.

Price

RE Himalayan 440

The Royal Enfield Himalayan 440 is priced at Rs 2.29 lakh (ex-showroom). This makes it a considerably more affordable alternative to the Himalayan 450 while retaining the core adventure-focused hardware and the newer 443cc engine.
