Ather Energy’s CEO, Tarun Mehta, confirmed on social media that they are working on a new family-oriented scooter, owing to popular demand, and a more powerful variant of the 450X - both scheduled to be launched next year.
The Ather family scooter was spotted testing last week and from those images, we saw that the overall design language is boxier than the other scooters in Ather’s lineup. It gets an apron-mounted headlight, foldable pillion footrest, and a petal disc up front. The seat could be longer and the floorboard area will likely be more spacious than that of the 450X and 450S as the CEO had mentioned about comfort and ample size in his post.
The family scooter will likely get the same 2.9kWh capacity battery pack, LCD instrument console, and other shared hardware and features with the 450S. We expect Ather to launch the LR (Low Range) version first with the High Range (HR) version following suit afterwards. It is expected to fetch a price tag of Rs 1.3 lakh (ex-showroom including FAME 2 subsidy) and will likely be launched by mid-2024. With the family scooter, Ather will be able to attract a more diverse range of customers. It will rival the TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak and Hero Vida V1 Pro.
Regarding the new variant of the 450X, the CEO said that the upcoming scooter will be more powerful and “....will have best-in-class features”. As such, we expect the electric scooter to have the same 3.7kWh capacity battery pack while the motor will be tuned to extract more performance than the 6.4kW peak power output in the 450X’s 3.7kWh variant. Features-wise, it might get cruise control and dual-channel ABS as they were the two biggest misses in the current-gen 450X. A week ago, Tarun Mehta posted on X (formerly Twitter) that transparent body panels will make a comeback, so we wouldn’t be surprised if it is introduced in the upcoming variant of the 450X.
The upcoming variant of the Ather 450X will likely be Rs 1.6 lakh (ex-showroom Bengaluru including FAME 2 subsidy), a premium of Rs 10,000 over the current 3.7kWh variant and will be launched in early 2024. Ather Energy had just completed 10 years in the two-wheeler industry and we think the new variant of the 450X will be an ode to that milestone.
