Honda India could learn a thing or two from the new CB150X

  • Gets a 4-valve liquid-cooled 149cc single-cylinder engine.
  • Styling is derived from Honda’s ‘X’ range of adventure tourers.
  • Features proper ADV tourer creds, including 181mm ground clearance.

The 2021 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) is underway and the first big news comes from Astra Honda with the launch of the 2021 CB150X. This is the first adventure tourer from Honda in the 150cc segment and beats the India-made Honda CB200X to be the smallest in the Japanese bikemaker’s CBX lineup.

Just like the CB200X, the CB150X borrows its powertrain from its naked counterpart, which in this case is the Honda CB150R Streetfire. Though the performance figures are yet to be revealed, the fuel-injected 149cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine produces 16.9PS at 9000rpm and 13.8Nm at 7000rpm in the CB150R and is mated to a 6-speed gearbox. We reckon the performance should be identical in the adventure tourer. However, the peaky character of the engine may not be the best for an ADV tourer, but we’ll reserve our judgment till the numbers are out.

The Honda CB150X follows the same design language of the X line of ADVs from the bikemaker. So it gets a stubby ADV-style beak, a short windscreen, and a sculpted fuel tank with long shrouds. And unlike the CB200X, these shrouds are functional, protecting the radiator from any debris. Given its intended purpose, Honda has equipped the CB150X with a bash plate.

The baby ADV runs on a diamond-type frame suspended onto a 37mm Showa USD fork offering 150mm of travel, and a monoshock. The braking setup and 17-inch wheels are borrowed from the Streetfire. Interestingly, the CB150X has a ground clearance of 181mm, which is 14mm more than the CB200X. That said, the 810mm seat of the CB200X is more accessible than the 817mm saddle height of its 150cc Indonesian sibling.

The Honda CB150X has been priced at RP 32 million or roughly Rs 1.67 lakh and goes up to Rs 35 million or Rs 1.83 lakh. This is around Rs 21,000 more expensive than the Honda CB200X. But with a more sophisticated engine and better ground clearance, we reckon the Indonesian bike is a more enticing proposition for its price tag. Unfortunately, Honda is unlikely to bring the CB150X to our shores.
