As electric two-wheelers slowly become a familiar sight on Indian roads, the conversation around them still tends to be fairly surface-level. Range numbers, charging times, and top speed are usually the first things buyers look at. But once the initial excitement fades and the motorcycle becomes part of daily life, very different questions start to matter. Is it safe in peak summer heat? How does it age? And will it still feel dependable a few years down the line?
This is where battery technology quietly shapes the ownership experience, and it’s also where Oben Electric has taken a noticeably conservative and arguably sensible route.
Oben, a Bengaluru-based EV manufacturer with motorcycles like the Rorr EZ and Rorr EZ Sigma, has chosen to base its products around Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry. A battery technology which the brand has pioneered in the electric two-wheeler industry.
LFP batteries bring strengths that are far more relevant in Indian riding conditions.

One of the biggest reasons manufacturers globally turn to LFP is thermal stability. Simply put, these batteries are far less prone to overheating as compared to Li-ion (Lithium Ion) and NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) batteries. In India, where two-wheelers spend long stretches stuck in traffic or parked out in the open, that matters. Heat is unavoidable here, and a battery that can remain stable under such conditions adds a layer of reassurance that goes beyond spec sheets.
This is exactly why Oben uses LPF batteries in its two-wheelers, as they are less prone to overheating and can withstand 50% higher heat resistance . Li-ion and NMC batteries are required to be cooled, which in turn adds more weight, complexity, and cost to the powertrain.
There’s also the question of consistency. Li-ion and NMC batteries perform well when new, but over time, the drop in efficiency becomes noticeable. LFP batteries are known to age more gracefully and are designed to discharge up to 80-90 percent of the total capacity without any long-term damage. LFP battery ensures double the lifecycle when compared to conventional EV battery chemistries.

Simply put, they degrade slower while supporting fast charging, can be charged frequently with minimal degradation, and tend to deliver a more predictable range even as the motorcycle racks up kilometres.
This durability is a key reason Oben is able to offer its Battery Protect plan with an industry-leading 8-year battery warranty. Such long-term coverage isn’t a marketing promise – it’s enabled by the inherent stability, slower degradation, and higher cycle life of LFP batteries.
For a rider, that means a machine that feels familiar even years later. Another very useful fact is that even if the battery is at a 10 percent state-of-charge, the performance of Oben’s electric motorcycles won't drop! One will be able to extract all the performance on tap and hit all the top speeds in each ride mode. Something which almost no other electric two-wheeler can achieve.

What adds weight to Oben’s battery choice is how the company builds its motorcycles. Unlike brands that rely heavily on outsourced systems, Oben designs and develops core components, including the battery pack, frame, and powertrain, in-house at its Bengaluru facility. This level of control allows better coordination between hardware and software, and it also simplifies the service side of ownership.
When parts are developed locally, and the engineering team is close to the product, resolving issues becomes quicker and more straightforward. That reflects in real-world ownership, where service concerns are typically addressed without long delays, an area where EVs are often criticised.
There’s also an environmental angle to LFP that doesn’t get talked about enough. These batteries are cobalt-free, making them less dependent on rare materials and cleaner from a sourcing standpoint. It’s a quieter benefit, but one that aligns well with the broader promise of electric mobility.

There’s also a significant environmental and geopolitical dimension to Oben’s battery choice. LFP batteries are Nickel- and Cobalt-free, unlike NMC batteries that rely heavily on these scarce and environmentally hazardous materials. Nickel and Cobalt mining involves extensive excavation and toxic by-products, making it damaging to the environment.
Additionally, India remains heavily dependent on imports largely from China for Nickel and Cobalt, exposing EV manufacturing to global price volatility and supply-chain risks. And, by using Iron and Phosphate – elements that are naturally abundant – LFP batteries reduce environmental impact while also lowering dependency on foreign mining ecosystems.

Rather than treating electric motorcycles as experimental tech, Oben’s approach feels grounded. This is done by prioritising battery safety, long-term reliability, and in-house engineering. The brand is clearly aiming to solve everyday ownership concerns instead of chasing quick wins. Decisions like choosing LFP chemistry, and backing it with the 8-year Battery Protect warranty, are likely to shape rider confidence far more than short-term performance gains.
As India’s EV space matures, it’s these kinds of decisions, and not just bigger numbers, that are likely to shape real trust among riders. By prioritising battery safety, doubled lifecycle, environmental responsibility, and long-term reliability, the brand addresses the concerns that matter for peace of mind. The use of LFP batteries has allowed Oben to create products which are not only safer, last longer than other typical electric vehicles and charge faster, but also look great at the same time. So for the customer, this is an absolute win-win situation!
