Yamaha is working on improving its already existent adaptive cruise control (ACC) system for bikes. Currently, the system is completely manual, and relies on the rider to brake and downshift to reduce the speed. It already has an automated manual transmission (AMT) on bikes like the Yamaha Tracer, MT-07, and the MT-09, which shifts gears on its own.

The new patent combines the AMT and the ACC for an even more seamless and a safer experience. This leaves the rider with the only job of balancing and steering the bike. The newly patented ACC uses a front-mounted radar to detect the motion of the vehicle in the front.
If it decelerates, the system will reduce the throttle opening, apply brakes, and even downshift if needed, to reduce the bike’s speed. This will reduce rider panic in emergency situations when the ACC is active.

BMW has its own version of this system, but it can only be found on its halo bikes, mainly because of the costs involved. The same can be expected from Yamaha. However, as technology becomes more affordable, it should trickle down to more affordable bikes – though don’t expect the Yamaha MT-15 or the Yamaha FZ-S to get it any time soon.
Though, if you want a relatively affordable two-wheeler with adaptive cruise control, you should check out the Ultraviolette Tesseract. Though you would have to wait for its delivery until next year.
