Another day, another big Yamaha bike updated abroad - yet we still don't have any of ‘em in India. The bikemaker has rolled out the 2025 XSR700, its middleweight neo-retro with new colours in Japan. While the bike itself is unchanged, it now wears 2 new coats of nostalgia. But is it just a case of looking through rose tinted glasses or has it been executed right?

There’s Radical White, a white-and-red combo that throws it back to Yamaha’s old racing liveries, and ‘Deep Purplish Blue Metallic C’ (yes that’s the official name) better known as Yamaha Blue, the brand’s trademark shade from MotoGP to showroom floors.

Beyond the paint, it’s the same XSR700 that’s been winning hearts overseas. The 689cc, CP2 (cross plane) parallel-twin engine that’s also found in the YZF-R7, MT-07 and Tenere 700 - continues to be the star: torquey down low, playful at the top, and versatile enough to be the ‘just right’ middleweight for riders across levels.

With upright ergonomics, simple instrumentation, round LED lamps, and just the right sprinkle of retro cues, the XSR700 catwalks that fine line between throwback styling and modern reliability. Sounds perfect, right?

Except in India the closest we get is the FZ-X at best; Yamaha has never brought the XSR700, or as a matter of fact the smaller sibling - the XSR155 to our market even though it's based on the same platform as the R15 V4 and MT-15 V2 that are fully localised.

Instead, we’re left to make do with smaller-capacity offerings while Triumph is the only manufacturer that kind of fills the middleweight retro space here. And, that’s the rub - Indian enthusiasts love Yamaha: the RD 350 is practically a cult-like following here, and the RX 100 a street legend.

But when it comes to big bikes with that same soul, Yamaha has kept its “sport heritage” toys firmly locked away overseas. So, while Europe and Japan get to argue over whether Radical White or Yamaha Blue looks better parked outside a café, we’re still stuck waiting (doesn’t apply to the uber rich who prefer to legally import).

For now, the 2025 XSR700 is another reminder: Yamaha knows how to build a modern classic, but India is still waiting for an invitation to the party. That said, things are not all blue. In fact, we may soon get the next closest thing albeit in a completely different avatar: the Yamaha MT-07, hopefully towards the end of this year.
