It looks more like an urban scrambler that won’t be afraid of a little mud, rather than a thorough terrain tamer

Not many weeks go by without an upcoming Royal Enfield bike being spotted. So, when last week was devoid of any such sighting, this week had to make up for it, and so it already has. The week has been kickstarted with the sighting of the Scrambler 650 and these are definitely some of the clearest visuals of the motorcycle yet.

What these reveal instantly is that the bike is quite similar to the Interceptor 650, while sporting a few new parts which could likely be shared with the Himalayan 450. The circular headlight, rear-view mirrors, taillight and turn indicators, all remind us of the former.  Complementing them is the teardrop-shaped fuel tank with knee recesses which looks old school and quite sporty.

There’s an LED headlight, borrowed from the Super Meteor 650 and the updated 650 twins, that is seen along with a small flyscreen and a headlight grille, both of which could be sold as optional accessories. Behind the flyscreen is a monopod console, more about which you can check out here

It will be powered by the marque’s 648cc, air-/oil-cooled, parallel twin heart with performance figures in the ballpark of 47.6PS and 52Nm. However, unlike its siblings, previous spy shots have revealed that the Scrambler 650 will get a two-in-one exhaust setup. Underpinnings include an inverted fork and twin shocks, which aren’t gas-charged ones as those on the Interceptor 650. The bike will get disc brakes at both ends and dual-channel ABS will be standard. Whether Royal Enfield will opt for switchable ABS for the Scrambler 650 remains to be seen.

The wheels on the test mule were wire-spoked units, which are likely to be the basic simple tube type. However, if it does come with tubeless spoke rims, it will not only be more practical, but also maintain the rugged look of the bike. As for the wheels, the rear one looks smaller than the front one and the bike could roll on an 18-/16-inch wheel combination.

Expect the Scrambler 650 to debut by late 2024 and it could be priced at Rs 3.50 lakh (ex-showroom). Its closest rival would be the Moto Morini Seiemmezzo 6 ½ Scrambler in our market.
